2020.06.30 00:45 thirstybard [Online][5e] [USA] Help me build a DM Resume (re-su-may). Livestreaming a few one-shots so multiple groups needed. Prefer 18+

Frog God Games is about to start their first ever Organized Play Campaign (OPC). I would like to become a DM for this but that requires "an extensive review process" including "style, content, knowledge, and personality". They estimate they will need more GMs by August so I hope to develop a reviewable "resume" by that time as well as bring in enough people to accelerate their need for new GMs.
How Will ThirstyBard Prove Himself
I will be doing livestreamed games and getting feedback on a third-party site (Demiplane). This will allow them to review actual games I run as well as view impartial feedback that I have no control over (which allows people to be more honest). These games will be between 1-4 sessions of 4-hours each. Dates/Times TBD. Any groups formed will probably start out with 1 session and once people show they are willing to commit to something longer we can start exploring longer story lines.
What is Organized Play
It allows you to keep and progress a character through multiple different tables and DMs. The games tend to be more episodic in nature and allow you to play when is convenient instead of committing to a single group. This gives you more freedom to choose who you enjoy playing with. There will also be events for online conventions (I predict every convention will have an online presence from now on) so by playing in the OPC you unlock additional opportunities to play in time-limited special events which give you bragging rights and make you superior to other gamers (just kidding, you're all great).
OPC is also a great way to meet a large variety of people. Often friendships are made and home groups are formed from people met at organized events.
Who is Frog God Games
They're a small, independent, 3rd party publisher, who have put out consistently good products for decades and are currently growing their online presence. Their tagline is "Adventures Worth Winning" where players need to do more than "roll" their way out of every situation but need to constantly stay on their toes and keep their wits about them. Fighting isn't all that great because it's so risky! You can check out their products here: https://www.froggodgames.com/
New Player Focused
No experience needed. In fact, if we can get together a group of new players I could run som
Requirements
Three accounts are needed and they are all free. To join you will need a Discord account. Astraltabletop.com account (Roll20 competitor). And a Demiplane.com account.
Just have a headset and decent mic for the Twitch livestream and Youtube videos.
Character Creation
The focus will be on exploration and interacting with the world and the people in it. As such, we will only be using the Player's Handbook for these games. No multi-classing or feats. Standard array. Yes combat is an important part of D&D but for these games it will be more about what the player does than what exists on the character sheet.
Characters will start out at low level but depending on the experience of the players there we may eventually run some higher level games as well.
For now though, just respond to this post with when you're available and what type of game your would prefer: city based or dungeon based. Both will have combat but the dungeon will slant more towards combat/exploration.

Abstract

The preservation and sustainable development of soil and water resources is one of the basic principles for the development of Kenya. Throughout the course of history, all the social improvement and economic development are deeply concerned with soil loss and ecological environmental protection. Poor soil and water conservation measures will lead to land degradation that are either natural or human induced. Natural hazards include land topography and climatic factors such as steep slopes, landslides from frequent floods, blowing of high velocity winds, rains of high intensity, strong leaching in humid regions and drought conditions in the dry regions. It is now common sense that soil and water conservation is the insurance for national ecology and its development. Consequences to land degradation leads to increased use of inputs and greater costs where farmers attempt to combat reduction in yields with increased inputs, particularly fertilizers. For the past long period of time, soil and water loss has been recognized as number one killer to the ecological environment and Kenya is at critical conditions for its development with complicated geological conditions and accelerated human destruction and serious soil and water losses. Based on historical documents, experience and detailed data analysis, this paper aims to review the general characteristics of soil and water loss, to explore the relationship between soil and water conservation and sustainable economic development, and to provide relevant strategies for soil and water conservation in Kenya.

Introduction

The Republic of Kenya is in Africa and a founding member of the East African Community (EAC) with the capital city Nairobi. Kenya's territory lies on the equator and overlies the East African Rift covering a diverse and expansive terrain that extends roughly from Lake Victoria to Lake Turkana (formerly Lake Rudolf) and further south-east to the Indian Ocean. It is bordered by Tanzania to the south and southwest, Uganda to the west, South Sudan to the north-west, and Ethiopia to the north and Somalia to the north-east. Kenya covers 581,309km2, and current population of 50,410,740 as of Saturday, January 27, 2018, based on the latest United Nations estimates, of which 74% lives in rural areas. Average population density is 87per km2, but its distribution is highly influenced by climate and agro-ecological zone. The highest density is found in western province. From 2002, the population growth rate was estimated at 1.8 5 per year. Life expectancy increased up to 60 years by 1993 but dropped to 45 years by 2002 due to high incidence of HIV/AIDS [1]. Overall, poverty level was estimated at 30.8% in 2004. Improved water sources are accessible for 62% of the population, ranging from 89 % in urban areas to 46% in rural areas. Improved sanitation facilities are used by 56% of the population in urban areas and 43% in rural areas, while average over the whole country is 48% AIDS [2].
Kenya has a warm and humid tropical climate on its Indian Ocean coastline and cooler in the savannah grasslands around the capital city, Nairobi, and especially closer to Mt Kenya, which has permanent snow on its peaks. Further in land are highlands in Central and Rift Valley regions where farmers grow tea and coffee as cash crops and are major foreign revenue earners. To the West are Nyanza and Western regions, with an equatorial, hot and dry climate which becomes humid around Lake Victoria, the largest tropical fresh-water lake in the world. This gives way to temperate and forested hilly areas in the neighbouring western region. The north-eastern regions along the border with Somalia and Ethiopia are arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) with near-desert landscapes. Kenya is known for its world class long distance athletes in track and also field events and rugby. Its diverse climate and geography give rise to expansive wildlife reserves, national parks and white sandy beaches at the Coastal region making Kenya home to the modern safari. Kenya has several world heritage sites such as Lamu, Diani, Bamburi and Kilifi, where international yachting competitions are held every year as well as being the cradle of mankind in Lake Turkana where oldest fossils for early man were first discovered. The Kenya economy is the largest by GDP in East and Central Africa [3,4]. The capital, Nairobi is a regional commercial hub. Agriculture is a major employer with country's traditionally exports of tea, coffee and fresh flowers to Europe.

Soil Types

The soil types in the country vary from place to place due to topography, amount of rainfall and parent material. In western Kenya the soils are mainly; Acrisols, Cambisols [5] and their mixtures, are highly weathered, leached and with high accumulation of Iron and Aluminum oxides. The soils in Central Kenya and the highlands are mainly Nitisols and Andosols, are young and of volcanic origin. The arid and semi-arid lands (ASALs) comprise of Vertisols, Gleysols and Phaozems [5], and are characterized by pockets of sodicity and salinity, low fertility and are vulnerable to erosion. Coastal soils are coarse textured and low in organic matter; the most common type being Arenosols, Luvisols and Acrisols. Widespread soil salinity, which has adversely influenced irrigation development, is found in isolated pockets around Lake Baringo basin in the Rift Valley and in Taveta division of the coast region [2].

Rainfall and agro-ecological zones

Average annual rainfall is 630mm with a variation from less than 200mm in northern Kenya to >1,800 mm on the slopes of Mt. Kenya. Rainfall distribution pattern is bimodal with long rains falling from March to May and short rains from October to November for most parts of the country. The climate is influenced by the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone and relief, and ranges from permanent snow above 4,600m on Mt. Kenya to true desert type in the Chalbi desert in Marsabit district, north of the country. About 80% of the country is ASAL, while 17% is considered high potential agricultural land, sustaining 75% of population. Forest cover is about 3% of total land area. The country has six major agro-ecological zones namely: Upper highland (UH), lower highland (LH), upper midland (LM), lower midland (LM), lowland (L) and coastal lowlands (CL). These zones are associated with corresponding temperature variations ranging from freezing to 40 0C. The Penman estimate of annual evaporation from open water surfaces in Kenya varies from 1000mm in Central highlands to 2,600mm in arid north. According to [2], agricultural land covers 33% of the country and is classified as (i) high potential land receiving more than 850mm of annual rainfall, 67,850km2 (ii) medium potential land receiving 850-730mm; covering 31,570km2 (iii) low potential land receiving less than 610mm, covering 42,050km2 (iv) other lands covering 48,670km2.

Soil water conservation

The United Nations predicts that 1.8 billion people will experience absolute water scarcity in less than 5 years, and worry that by 2025, two out of three persons will be living in waterstressed regions. Already every five persons worldwide cannot access their basic everyday water resource, a fact recently witnessed in Cape Town, South Africa which is in dire need of water with serious rationing of the commodity. Water may well be a renewable resource, but its capacity to renew itself depends on how it is managed. Man faces serious water management crisis according to the Pacific Institute book in its world water series [6]. Increasing efficiency in use and reducing wastage in water systems is quite often the cheapest, easiest way for us to get new water, something that is mostly ignored in future water planning programs the world over [7]. Poor management of resources such as unplanned land clearing for cultivation and deforestation of the water towers has led to serious environmental and ecological degradation as well as reduced water volumes. In Kenya, hiving of forest land for political expediency plus illegal invasion and settlements in large swathes of forests at Hombe and Timau in Mt Kenya, Ngong forest, Masaai Mara and Aberdare ranges among others has led to erratic and low rainfall experienced in the maize and wheat growing belts of Kenya as well as in the Game reserves and national parks where the rivers are drying up. The dwindling water resources as the rivers dry has led to migration of the famous flamingo birds from L. Nakuru hence affecting ecotourism in the bird sanctuary. The Masaai Mara Game Reserve that was once voted the seventh wonder of the world due to the wildebeest seasonal migration every year is experiencing challenges as the Mara river shrinks and the crocodiles and other wildlife unable to thrive and flourish. Some lakes like Kamnyarok in the same belt have dried up leaving a trial of death and devastation in their wake.
Kipsang [8] in an article in the standard newspaper bemoaned the human activity threatening important water towers in Kenya especially Kaptagat (Plate 1) that forms part of the Mau complex. On a national scale, accelerating deforestation, soil erosion and environmental degradation remain a major concern. Water resources are under pressure in parts of the country owing to overuse, not only for agricultural and domestic consumption but also for hydro-power and wildlife. Ecological disruption of inland lakes, particularly Lakes Victoria, Turkana and Naivasha, is a major concern for the fishing industry. Other inland lakes such as Lakes Baringo and Ol' Bolossat are equally devastated. For example L. Kamnyarok which has already dried up and unless something drastic is done, it will be extinct in the near future. The lake was the lifeline for many wild animals such as crocodiles, elephants, buffaloes and various birds. There was a time when some 15,000 crocodiles gathered in this lake but the rapid drying up of the lake have caused death to a large number as they tried to escape and find a new home elsewhere. The people of the region and its surrounding areas were fully dependent (plate 2) on this water source for various activities. The dying lake once got its recognition as a wetland throughout the world by the Ramsar Convention but is no more. The residents are now worried on how to continue with their farming activities and watering their livestock, a major challenge with the current draught ravaging many parts of Kenya. Many reasons being advanced on possible causes for the drying up of lake such as poor farming practices and gulley of Kiptilit resulting in acute sedimentation and indiscriminate cutting of trees were considered among the common factors responsible. It was though, decided that the lake would be restored but the fight between the Barwessa division's residents and the Baringo county council have so far disrupted the initiative (plate 3).

The donors funding the restoration of the lake demanded that the residents to vacate the place while the residents demanded compensation before giving up though there are indications that the land is an officially declared National Reserve. Though earlier attempts to conserve the lake failed, the KWS director has been hoping that the residents of the Barwessa Division will follow the example of the residents of the Rimoi Game Reserve where land reverted to the government and conservation effected as the county council of Baringo aimed to save the reserve from extinction. For L. Baringo, the situation has been aggravated by poor land use resulting in siltation and output from fishing and forestry sectors in particular has declined substantially due to resource degradation [9]. L. Baringo is one of the important fresh water lakes in the Kenyan Rift Valley that is primarily arid in nature and as a significant world Ramsar site, it is important in terms of socio-economic diversity and biodiversity. Despite this, the lake is threatened with siltation resulting from human activities in its catchment. A study by Lwenya [10] on Human aspects of siltation, Causes, Impacts and Interventions to identify the factors contributing to siltation and to suggest strategies and opportunities to mitigate the problem indicated that the livelihoods of communities around L. Baringo depend on livestock rearing, charcoal burning and cultivation all precursors to degradation of the ecosystem.
Socio-economic factors, including poverty, land fragmentation; low standard of living and earning are cited as drivers contributing to the increased risk of watersheds [11] due to differences in land uses and land utilization types. Land ownership influences socioeconomic and political position and benefits of different groups of people. Land issues and conflicts that occur are related to poverty, inequality and land reformation processes. Contestations over land are most noticeable among the poor folks, who lack alternative means of supporting their livelihoods [12], leading to lack of resources conservation. Transition from forest to another agricultural use leads to significant impact on topsoil resistance and resilience [13]. For most wetlands, soil erosion by water is the most common process causing sedimentation downslope and on riverine valleys meaning there is a distinct linkage between erosion and watershed conservation [14], and these are accelerated by deforestation, overgrazing, and the cultivation of unsuitable or fragile land (plate 4) [15].

Plate 4: Mau Forest Complex, one of Kenya's most important water catchments, is severely threatened by unsustainable exploitation such as forest clearing for charcoal production.
📷
L. Ol'Bolossat watershed has been affected by anthropic disturbances [16]. In the headwater catchments of the central Kenya, a prevalent cause of land degradation is unplanned deforestation to allow for human settlements and subsistence agriculture. In the highlands of Nyandarua, the ubiquitous landuse changes are believed to be the major cause of the dwindling volumes of L. Ol'Bolossat (Plates 5-7), which has recently been declared an endangered water body by the regional government of Kenya [17]. So far, few studies have been carried out on the spatial-temporal lands cover changes possibly affecting the size of L. Ol'Bolossat hence lack of reliable in-situ data. Accumulation of organic matter and silt from the surrounding farmlands have contributed to water pollution and fluctuation of water level from zero to 250cm depending on rainfall, surface run off and seepage from the basin [18]. The lake suffers domestic and agricultural pollution due to unsustainable farming practices that lead to occurrence of waterborne diseases [19]. According to the forest Act 2005, Kenya Forestry Services (KFS) has the mandate of managing Kenyan Forests. The law allows for collaboration and participation of the local community living adjacent to the forest to conserve the forest in question and in return earn a living through extraction of non-wood products.

The use of agrochemicals in neighbouring farms has led to bioaccumulation in fish and pose health risk to human as well as fish death and causes extinction of some species [19]. In 1992 the Fisheries department established that turbidity of L. Ol'Bolossat was not suitable for fresh water fish though mud fish could do well in those conditions. Nielsen [20] indicated that habitat loss and degradation ruin the fisheries through water abstraction, removal of vegetation for development and agriculture. Communally owned resources experience challenges when being shared; such as unequal sharing of resources, dissimilar priorities, location of the resource, dissimilar cultures and unequal representation in the management [21]. These challenges are in turn manifested in poor conservation measures of L. Ol'Bolossat due to the tragedy of the commons. The free rider rationale where no individual community member bears responsibility. Poor land-use systems together with resource user conflicts, political marginalization, poverty, weak institutions and policies have been observed as factors contributing to land and water degradation. Negative impacts of siltation as identified above included destruction of fish breeding areas, flooding, poor water quality affecting human and animal use and increased resource user conflicts. Strategies that various institutions are undertaking such as replanting indigenous vegetation, are show little progress due to poor or lack of co-ordination, the nature of the landscape, lack of funding and political goodwill. Lwenya [10] identified opportunities for soil management systems such as use of indigenous trees and grasses to enhance livelihoods for local communities, while at the same time conserving the soils. Which in most cases are ignored by the local communities as was observed by Koech [22,23] in Bura irrigation Scheme and it surrounding areas.
A case in point is the now Controversial Mau water tower where the forests are diminishing very fast [19]. The Mau Forests Complex (MFC) forms the largest closed-canopy forest ecosystem in Kenya, the largest indigenous montane forest (417,000 hectares) in East Africa, and is the most important water catchment in the Kenyan Rift Valley and Western Kenya. Investigations show MFC has been affected by widespread unplanned settlements, irregular forest land allocation and illegal extraction of forest resources destroying approximately a quarter of the MFC over the last 15 years [24].
In addition, sections of the MFC have been impacted by forest plantations (10% of Mau forest), subsistence and cash crop farming and unregulated logging concessions. Scientists predict that further destruction of the MFC will cause an environmental disaster in Kenya and significantly reduce river flows and lake levels. This has already been observed in the dwindling river Mara, Gucha and others feeding Victoria basin. The MFC forests provide critical environmental services to the country: freshwater provisioning, river flow regulation, flood mitigation, recharge of ground water reservoirs, erosion control, water purification, biodiversity conservation and micro-climate regulation. The ecosystem services support a range of economic sectors including agriculture and tourism and the market value of such goods and services generated annually in tea and tourism sectors alone, in excess of US$ 229 million [24]. The restoration of the MFC is of major interest to the government of Kenya and is now a national priority. The politicization of the removal of encroachers from several forest blocks in the southern MFC demonstrated the importance of the ecosystem and the extent of the vested interests involved [23].
The role of trees in agricultural production and water catchment has become starkly apparent in Kenya following the now well-known encroachment and degradation of the Mau forests complex. The complex is one of Kenya's five water towers, the others being Mt. Kenya, Aberdare ranges, the Cherangani Hills and Mt. Elgon (http://www.agriculturesnetwork.org/magazines/ east-africa/62-trees-farming/mau-forest-degradation & http:// www.agriculturesnetwork.org/magazines/east-africa/62-treesfarming/ mauforest-degradation#sthash.jcM9RLhc.dpuf). It is also argued that forest complex biodiversity and habitats provide vital ecological services to the country, in terms of water storage; river flow regulation; flood mitigation; recharge of groundwater; reduced soil erosion and siltation; water purification; conservation of biodiversity; and; micro-climate regulation. Through these ecological services, the forests complex supports key economic sectors in Rift Valley and western Kenya, including energy, tourism, agriculture, and industries. The negative impact of the degradation of the Mau forest has been felt most by farmers along the valleys through which rivers originating from the forest drain as well as the tea and tourism industries in the neighbourhood. Production of tea is only possible in the vicinity of tropical forests, a crop which is among the highest earner of foreign exchange in Kenya, requires a cool climate which can only exist in the proximity of established forests such as the Mau complex. The Mara and Ewaso-Ng'iro rivers which feed the Masaai Mara Game reserve and L. Natron (flamingos breeding site), respectively, originate from the Maha.
(http://www.agriculturesnetwork.org/magazines/eastafrica/ 62-trees-farming/mau-forestdegradation). The threat posed by the encroachment and degradation of the Mau over the decade between 1995 - 2006 led to a sustained public outcry that in 2007 compelled the Government to set up an Interim Coordinating Secretariat (ICS) for the Restoration of the Mau Forest. To date the Secretariat has not only managed to halt the encroachment and about 70 per cent of forest destruction, but has also put in place sustainable measures to restore the forests complex in collaboration with Kenyan Forest Service and other development partnersn (http://www.agriculturesnetwork.org/magazines/eastafrica/ 62-trees-farming/mau-forestdegradation))). This initiative was spearheaded by Kenya's Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Raila Odinga in 2008 at the point where more than 100,000 out the total of 416,000 hectares had disappeared. One of the most dramatic manifestations of this destruction was that the then newly constructed multimillion shilling Sondu Miriu Hydro Electric Project could only achieve 50 per cent of its potential power production (http://www.agriculturesnetwork.org/magazines/eastafrica/ 62-trees-farming/mau-forestdegradation))).
Restoration of degraded soil calls for the application of certain management and conservation measures and the undertaking of much needed precautions. Measures such as contour cultivation, tied ridging, terracing, strip cropping, dense vegetation and planting of cover crops, mulches, fast growing trees, selection of proper crop rotation, quick growing species and integrated cropping system, provision of alternative fuel sources, check structures, protected watersheds, proper land preparation and ploughing, application of fertilizer, amendments and organic manures and drainage systems are quite often mentioned as the techniques which help to protect and improve the land [25]. Soil and water conservation programs have gained recognition in the world as a means of water management. In the 1970 and 80's, much emphasis in Kenya was on soil erosion control by structures such as gabions to convey and direct runoff away from agricultural land. Soil and water conservation, however, is now embraced as a tool for the management of soil and water land resources in order to satisfy the needs of the land users through sustained agricultural production [26].
About 80% of Kenya's land mass is ASAL and supports 35% human and 50% livestock populations [26]. The masses are poor and depend on relief food supply for survival. To improve production systems, the ministry of Agriculture through National Soil and Water Conservation Program (NSWCP) in Soil and Water Conservation Branch [27,28] initiated the soil and water management activities. These entailed water conservation, water harvesting and water management. These activities increases the amount of water stored in the profile by use of bench terraces, tied ridges, fallow, contour fallows, mulching, rotations, mixed cropping and conservation tillage techniques as well as soil fertility improvement practices. Water harvesting, the collection and concentration of runoff was for the production of crops, trees, fodder and pasture establishment [28] and also for domestic and livestock purposes. The term harvesting is used instead of water conservation or water management. Water management is the efficient or economic management of available water in agriculture, and use of subsurface and surface resources in agricultural production. In broad terms, it encompasses conservation, harvesting, control, regulation and use of water in agriculture.
In Kenya, the severity of soil erosion was realized as early as the 1920s. In an attempt to arrest the situation, compulsory terracing schemes were introduced in the 1940s, but they were unpopular because the benefits were unclear to the local people. Some techniques developed during this period were and are effective but the fact that they were based on enforced communal work meant that soil conservation was bitterly resented by the local people [29,30]. Many terraces fell into disrepair around the time of independence (1961) and indeed the programs catalyzed resistance and armed struggle against the colonial regime [31,32]. By 1961, the relative proportions that were terraced in Kangundo- Matungulu-Mbiuni in Agro-ecological zone 3 (high potential land) and Masii in zone 4 (semi-arid upland) were essentially the same as those of 1948. After independence however, terracing was renewed voluntarily and farmers began to construct them within a few years of opening new land, even in the newly settled areas of Makueni (drier, warmer and lower zone 4 and 5 settled after 1945), where average slopes were less steep. Un-terraced arable land had been virtually eliminated in all three areas by 1978 where significant progress was made between 1961 and 1978, when arable area was itself growing rapidly due to increased population. Terrace construction continued in the 1980s, and was promoted by the Machakos Integrated Development Program and by 1980, erosion on arable land was considered to be under control. The problem was, however, only beginning to be solved on grazing land.
Little conservation happened immediately after independence in 1963, until a new soil and water conservation campaign began in the 1970s. This campaign started up just at the time when people were becoming increasingly concerned about the future of their farmlands. People were now anxious to listen to advice, and were ready to participate in conservation activities, where slopes were steep and erosion rate high due to unstable soil structure. Erosion was worsening due to the expanding cropped area while draught spells regularly affected yields, especially maize. Enforced conservation did not work in colonial times but in the 1970s people were ready to respond to new campaign as they envisaged accrued benefits to their efforts. This implied that awareness and communal participation in decision making bore fruits that were lacking in pre-colonial times,Machakos has the reputation for being the district with the best soil and water conservation in Kenya [29]. The national conservation project was initiated in1974 under Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) sponsorship where field work in Machakos district commenced in1979 and was later expanded to the whole country in 1989. At community level, farmer-based soil management practices and mechanical measures have been practiced ever since and have been largely successful, particularly in semi-arid Eastern Kenya, and included Strip cropping, contour farming, ridging, mulching & rotation and physical techniques such as terracing, cutoff drains among others. The main soil and water conservation measures practiced here are grouped into agronomic, soil management and mechanical. Agronomic include increasing soil surface cover, intercropping, contour farming, cover cropping and agro-forestry, increasing soil surface roughness, and increasing both surface depression storage and infiltration. Soil management measures include application of fertilizers, manures, sub-soiling to break the hardpan, buffer strip, crop rotation and drainage while mechanical measures include contouring, ridging and terraces [25]. Field experiments in semi-arid regions of Kenya have shown that soil water conservation techniques can result in increased maize grain yields. The degree of benefit in a particular season is dependent on rainfall amount and distribution [33]. In Meru Central district conservation measures have been undertaken but at a lower scale compared to Machakos District. Agricultural productivity is very high in this humid mountainous area where most farms are for commercial production of wheat, barley, flowers and Asian vegetables. Small scale farmers grow tea as a cash crop. The NSWCP lasted from 1974 to 2000 [34]. In the last 10 years of the program, a catchment approach was emphasized where efforts and resources were concentrated in a catchment for 1 year. Problems and opportunities were identified within the land years in a participatory manner, and subsequent development activities planned. A baseline study found that both human activities and changing environmental conditions contributed to environmental degradation in Meru District. Concerted project interventions were undertaken to protect and sustain the mountain environment in Mt Kenya region. Physical or mechanical soil conservation structures used in this area are permanent features made of earth, stones or masonry. They are designed to protect the soil in the hilly area from uncontrolled runoff or erosion, and retain water where needed. They supplement agronomic or vegetative measures but do not substitute for them. The appropriate type of physical structure to use depends on i) climate and the need to retain or discharge runoff water; ii) farm size; iii) soil characteristic such as texture, depth and drainage patterns; v) availability of an outlet or waterway to discharge excess water; v) availability of labor and, vi) adequacy of existing agronomic or vegetative measures.

Types of Conservation Measures in Kenya

Soil and land management practices such as tillage and cropping practices, directly affect the overall soil erosion problem and solutions on a farm. When crop rotations or changing tillage practices cannot effectively control erosion on a field, a combination of measures might be considered necessary. For example, contour ploughing, strip cropping, or terracing may be considered. The most practiced measures in Kenya and elsewhere involves:- (i) Agronomic such as plant/soil cover, conservation farming methods, contour farming (ii) Vegetative: such as planting barriers (vegetative strips), live fences, windbreaks (iii) Structural: such as Fanya Juu, terraces, banks, bunds, cut off drains, barriers and lastly (iv) Overall management: such as area closures, selective clearing. For more examples and description of the conservation measures refer to sections below depending on Soils and Agro-climatic zonation:

Plate 8: a). Fanya juu bund in maize field after harvest. Note Napier grass strip on upper part of bund, and maize trash in ditch below. b). Fanya juu terraces in a semi-arid area which have developed over time into benches. Note the well-established grass strips along the bunds u/Hanspeter Liniger, WOCAT.

Terraces

Leveled bench terraces and earth banding on existing slopes are common earth structure in Kenya. Sometimes, and especially in the highlands, steps are constructed across hillsides and strips of crop residues are covered with soils dug from above. The resulting incorporation of organic matter increases soil fertility and enhances infiltration [35] through macro porosity as well as increased water retention in soils [36,37]. The fanya juu earth bunding system is now modern tradition in Kenya [38]. The fanya-juu terrace (Plate 8) is designed to trap run-off and suspend sediment. A trench is dug and soil thrown upslope to form an embankment which is very effective in trapping runoff and there is evidence crop performance is increased [33]. The challenge however, is the high labor requirement in their construction and maintenance [39]. Though fanya-juu terracing is laborious, it is well understood by the people of Eastern Kenya, and has shown to be effective. Mwangi [40] observed highest maize yields in terraced compared to all other conservation measures in sloping land. Machakos district has achieved an average 1,000 km of new fanya-juu terraces constructed each year, as well as several hundred kilometers of cut-off drains since the mid-1980s. The conservation campaign has been so effective that it is estimated that 70% of all cultivated land has now been terraced as the farmers, many of whom are women, have recognized the benefits of terracing. Conservation of moisture and also soil has led to better and more reliable crop yields. The remaining are mainly in the lower, drier areas where more attention and campaign should be focused now. A fanya chini is like a fanya juu, except that the soil is put on the lower side of the contour trench, not on the upslope side as in a fanya juu. Fanya chini are used to conserve soil and divert water. The resulting embankment can be used to grow fodder. Fanya chini are easier to make than fanya juu, but they do not lead the formation of a bench terrace over time. They can be used on slopes up to 35%.

Conservation Agriculture in Kenya

There are three major principles on conservation agriculture practised in Kenya: minimal soil disturbance, permanent soil cover and crop rotations (Plate 9a & 9b). Soils under conservation agriculture tend to considerably improve their soil organic matter (SOM) content after applying the technology for several years. SOM can be considered as the most important soil fertility and quality factor influencing other soil properties such as macro porosity, infiltration, water holding capacity or soil structure. In conservation agriculture, only minimal or no soil tillage is applied and involves crop seeding without mechanical seedbed preparation and minimal or no soil disturbance since the harvest of the previous crop [25]. A number of farms are practising minimal tillage through precision farming such as Acacia farm in Athi River and Mr Sessions' farm in Naro Moro. The process involves use of Global Positioning (GPS) to minimize on soil compaction to an efficiency of 99% where deviation from ruts for truck and tractor wheels is less than 1 degree. The farm traffic uses same axle size and moves on same position season by season during farm operations to minimize compacting the whole land area. The crop residues after harvest are all returned to the farm where they decompose and add to the organic carbon pool. This has the added advantage of holding more moisture after rains especially in these ASALs and improving soil friability and resilience. Yields have been observed to increase tremendously in these low rainfall areas and a promise to food security in the region.

Link to This Year In KPOP - 2018

Thank You!

I'm sure we would all like to look back on 2019 in kpop with full hearts, but it has been a tough one, hasn't it? It's a jarring experience to even read the top of this post. As a subreddit, we've continued to grow in leaps and bounds, but some of the number stats for certain months are heavy with implications of the scandals and tragedies we became all-too-familiar with this year. As moderators, we did the best we could to manage these challenges, to keep the community informed, to honor the precious artists we lost, and to brace ourselves for the broader public attention that came to our little spot on the internet as a result. Through all of this, our team has succeeded some and failed some and did what we could to adjust to a much larger scale of activity. It has been a learning experience, to say the least.
There is, of course, still plenty to celebrate in our community. We reached two major milestones. Our 10 year anniversary passed in July and we hit 400,000 subscribers soon after in August. In Reddit's official 2019 Year in Review we were the 3rd most active music subreddit on the site and the 2nd most active per genre.
But if you want to see the best of us, it isn't in our numbers or milestones. It's in every community member who updated the wikis, every participant in thoughtful discussions, generated by clever or important prompts, every helpful translation, every carefully crafted feature that requires so much work behind-the-scenes, every offer of support or comfort to a fellow user struggling with all the heavy news 2019 brought in, and in so many other diverse and lovely ways. We'd like to thank each and every one of you for contributing so much positive content and energy to our community all year.
As K-Pop gains more global attention, we need you more than ever to help keep this place both lively and friendly. It's a new decade! Let's make it a better one! We wish you a 2020 with fully-charged electronics, bops aplenty, and all the dreamiest comebacks!

Attack of the Fanboy - Dean James - 4 / 5 stars
As only the first entry in Supermassive Games' new anthology series, The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan offers a very replayable experience that is a lot of fun both in single player and with friends, leaving us very excited to see what they have in store for future entries yet to come.
Bloody Disgusting - Neil Bolt - 4 / 5 stars
Sure, Man of Medan has a few rough edges, but it’s a confident first step in a new series of games. It keeps the core of what made people love Until Dawn and breathes fresh life into it by adding more depth to the branching narrative system, and including an excellent multiplayer side. A little more polish and a bit more bite to the game’s finale would be nice, but this is still a hugely entertaining slice of interactive horror that brings the thrilling uncertainty of other people’s decisions to the murder party.
Boomstick Gaming - Deadite AGK - 7.6 / 10

CGMagazine - Jed Whitaker - 5.5 / 10
The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan pales in comparison to Until Dawn in practically every way and only surpasses it in its amount of jankiness.
COGconnected - Garrett Drake - 90 / 100
Supermassive’s back in full swing.
Cerealkillerz - Gabriel Bogdan - German - 8 / 10
The concept behind Man of Medan does not reach its full potential in the singleplayer mode due to the short play time, missed meaningful turning point opportunities and a lot of technical issues but manages to do a lot right in the different multiplayer parts of the game. If you are looking for a good horror evening with friends in front of the TV or online you should give Man of Medan a chance.
Cultured Vultures - Nick Meekham - 7 / 10
Supermassive Games have managed to again tap into what makes a good horror tale. If you can forgive some of its cheesy narrative moments and glitches, Man of Medan shows promise for a future franchise. You just have to play with a friend to fully appreciate it.
Daily Star - Dom Peppiatt - 5 / 5 stars
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan is a must-play for anyone that appreciates horror gaming at its finest, for anyone that enjoys picking away at how a game is put together, for anyone that's got even a passing interest in finding the best storytelling vidoegames have to offer.
Destructoid - Chris Carter - 7 / 10
Supermassive Games is quickly proving that they have a knack for high budget adventure projects that many studios simply do not. I have no idea when the next "Dark Pictures universe" entry is coming, but I'll be waiting for it.
Digitally Downloaded - Matt Sainsbury - 4 / 5 stars
Supermassive Game's high concept - an anthology of horror stories - is off to a great start with Man of Medan. We don't get nearly enough horror that aims to be thoughtful like this. The challenge will be to make sure that each game in the series is different enough to reflect a different approach to horror, but things are off to a good start.
DualShockers - Chris Compendio - 6 / 10
Until Dawn follow-up Man of Medan has amazing ideas in the cooperative space but collapses under the weights of performance issues.
EGM - Mollie L Patterson - 6 / 10
While it feels like a not insignificant step down from the breakout hit Until Dawn, Supermassive Games' latest attempt at interactive horror still serves up some compelling thrills and chills. The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan definitely gets better the deeper you get into its story, but traveling that path is fraught with technical issues and questionable narrative direction more often than it should be.
Eurogamer - Edwin Evans-Thirlwell - No Recommendation / Blank
Supermassive's Dark Pictures anthology gets off to a promising start, but this first nautical instalment winds up a little too promptly.
Everyeye.it - Giuseppe Arace - Italian - 7.5 / 10
Man of Medan keeps afloat thanks to an atmosphere full of charm, sufficiently original multiplayer gameplay, and a valuable sense of investigative discovery that supports the limited exploration.
Game Informer - Andrew Reiner - 7 / 10
The uninteresting story has plenty of dull moments, but isn't enough to kill the thrill of trying to keep all of the characters alive, especially when played with friends
Game Revolution - Michael Leri - 3.5 / 5 stars
Despite its technical shortcomings, Man of Medan is a decent maiden voyage for Supermassive’s new Dark Pictures Anthology series.
GameByte - Lara Jackson - Unscored
All in all, Supermassive Games is off to a strong start with to The Dark Pictures Anthology with Man of Medan.
GameMAG - Russian - 7 / 10
Early disclosure of the story and awful save system are disappointing, but a great cast of characters awesome graphics, atmospheric scenes and interesting integration of online cooperation are able to bring you the pleasure for a couple of evenings, if you decide to check all consequences of your decisions.
GamePro - Linda Sprenger - German - 50 / 100
Bumpy horror adventure that is narrative, artisanal and technically disappointing.
GameSkinny - David Jagneaux - 7 / 10 stars
Supermassive Games proves that lightning can strike twice with Man of Medan, which (mostly) successfully carries the torch handed down by Until Dawn while adding a clever co-op twist.
GameSpew - Kim Snaith - 8 / 10
The horror genre is a tough nut to crack, but Man of Medan proves, once again, that Supermassive Games is truly the master of video game horror. I’m more excited than ever to see what the rest of the Dark Pictures Anthology will hold.
GameSpot - James O'Connor - 6 / 10
Man of Medan is a thinner, flawed follow-up to Until Dawn that is saved by its online co-op mode.
GameWatcher - Chris Capel - 8 / 10
A fun and deeply scary game - and the multiplayer needs to be experienced.
Gameblog - Jonathan Bushle - French - 8 / 10
The Dark Pictures - Man of Medan applies the Until Dawn recipe to a smaller and cheaper game, wittch cooperative features, and the results are very good !
Gamers Heroes - 5 / 10
While Man of Medan has a decent horror story, a number of technical problems and inconsistencies derail the experience. It's best to wait for a patch or two before purchasing.
GamesBeat - Dean Takahashi - 88 / 100
I think this is much more fun and takes advantage of the fundamentally social nature of the choose-your-adventure style gameplay in Man of Medan.
God is a Geek - Chris Hyde - 9 / 10
Man of Medan builds on the solid foundation of Until Dawn. The decisions you make actively alter your experience, meaning you'll want to replay it over and over.
Hardcore Gamer - Kyle LeClair - 3 / 5
Despite how negative I may have seemed there, I do genuinely want The Dark Pictures Anthology to continue and succeed (the game even seems to tease the next entry in it, seemingly already in the works), as I loved Until Dawn and would love to see more similar experiences from Supermassive. But despite having the same solid mechanics as its big brother, Man of Medan starts the anthology off on a thoroughly "meh" note, thanks its unimpressive, poorly-constructed story.
Heavy - Elton Jones - 8 / 10
While relatively shorter than Until Dawn, The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan still manages to deliver a worthwhile romp through a supernatural horror film.
Hobby Consolas - Daniel Quesada - Spanish - 84 / 100
A new entry in the horror genre that offers a clear and effective gameplay proposal. Some technical hiccups lessen the experience, but its a very enjoyable adventure, specially if you try the multiplayer.
IGN - 7 / 10
It's not easy to keep everyone alive in Man of Medan, and you won't necessarily want to, especially in 2-player co-op.
MSPoweruser - Lewis White - 8 / 10
Looking back at it, Man of Medan isn’t the awesome successor to Until Dawn we wanted, but it’s a good step to delivering that successor. While it inherits a similar structure – and it’s bizarre performance issues – it just isn’t as enthralling as what came before. Some routes are disjointed and the cast and environment aren’t as interesting as the sassy clique that fought off the Wendigos, but it’s still a strong horror experience that makes for a fantastic co-op experience. The look on your friend’s face when you accidentally kill his character is one you’ll never forget.
Metro GameCentral - 6 / 10
Combining Until Dawn's style of mild horror with online multiplayer works great, but the actual story and characters fail to engage.
MonsterVine - Spencer Legacy - 4 / 5
Despite some technical hiccups, Man of Medan succeeds as an engrossing interactive thriller that will keep you on your toes for the duration of a couple of playthroughs. With so many different ways to play the game, alone or with friends online or locally, Man of Medan is an overall great horror experience.
New Game Network - Josh Hinke - 74 / 100
The Dark Pictures - Man Of Medan takes a while to get going, but eventually the scares start kicking in, and it's a lot of fun screaming alongside your friends. This is a game that's meant to be shared and is a blast to play in groups. A promising start to the horror anthology that will hopefully only get better with subsequent entries.
Noisy Pixel - Azario Lopez - 8 / 10
The Dark Pictures Anthology: Man of Medan presents some amazing steps forward in the narrative adventure genre made by Supermassive Games. They have truly outdone themselves with their attention to story development and overall design.
PC Gamer - 81 / 100
Man of Medan tells a familiar story in a fascinating way, and even moreso with a partner.
PCWorld - Hayden Dingman - 3.5 / 5 stars
Overall I really enjoyed Man of Medan though and I’m looking forward to replaying it—and to whatever comes next for the series, as it’s pitched as an anthology.
PlayStation Universe - Michael Harradence - 8.5 / 10
Man of Medan weaves a brilliant and compelling story punctuated by some genuinely creepy moments. More importantly, your choices matter, and the multitude of collectibles and different outcomes based on your decisions means there's more than enough reason to keep plugging away at Supermassive Games' latest horror romp. It's not without its issues, sure, but they're not enough to deter from what is one of PS4's best interactive dramas.
Polygon - Austen Goslin - Unscored
An interactive horror game only works if it scares or surprises you, and Man of Medan does both.
PowerUp! - Greg Newbegin - 7.5 / 10
The shorter narrative and anthology presentation suits the title better than a standalone full-priced title
Press Start - Harry Kalogirou - 8 / 10
Man of Medan is a stellar example of how to push boundaries and innovate within genres that seem restrictive at first glance.
Push Square - John Cal McCormick - 5 / 10
Man of Medan kicks The Dark Pictures Anthology off with a whimper rather than a bang. The format has a lot of potential, but this was undoubtedly the wrong story to showcase it. The narrative is slight and rarely gets out of first gear, the characters are annoying, the scares limp, and the dialogue unnatural. There's constant technical hiccups. In fact, the scariest thing about Man of Medan is how it ever went gold in the state that it's in.
RPG Site - George Foster - 7 / 10
Supermassive's next step into horror starts strong.
Rock, Paper, Shotgun - Sin Vega - Unscored
I enjoyed this one, and if Supermassive Games continue on trend, I’m optimistic for the rest of the series.
Shacknews - Josh Hawkins - 6 / 10
While Man of Medan isn’t the greatest game you’ll play this year, it does a good enough job of setting the Dark Pictures Anthology series out to sea.
SomHráč.sk - Martin Černický - Czech - 75 / 100
Man of Medan is Until Dawn, just in slightly different colors and with a shorter playing time - but also with a correspondingly reduced price tag. The Supermassive Games have delivered exactly what they promised from the start, and from this perspective it´s not a disappointment.
Spaziogames - Italian - 7.5 / 10
The first game of The Dark Pictures Anthology is a step backward for the genre. The game needs a re-work especially in the structure of QTE and choices, but at this price and with multiplayer modes the overall value is good.
Spiel Times - Ishan Dey - 7 / 10
Despite having a decent story-line and a well-structured choice system, Man of Medan is a typical narrative experience ruined by a medley of messy controls. It does not present you with any moral dilemma, however, it may bring about horrifying premonitions. Therefore, one must tread carefully on uncharted territory and ponder whether probing deeper will have any inadvertent consequences.
Stevivor - Ben Salter - 6.5 / 10
While the story didn’t live up to expectations, the actors’ performances are fantastic as Man of Medan delivers its quota of horror tropes in chapter one of The Dark Pictures Anthology.
TechRaptor - Andrew Stretch - 8.5 / 10
Man of Medan takes players through an epic choose your own horror adventure. Whether you're a fan of horror, or a fan of having a friend around to hide behind Man of Medan is an incredibly fun game. Supermassive's approach to divergent story and story secrets rewards players for pushing themselves to experience the Man of Medan in a number of ways.
The Games Machine - Marco Ravetto - Italian - 8 / 10
Man of Medan is an enjoyable adventure. The story, albeit a little bit predictable, is quite interesting with a good amount of branches and different endings. Some dialogues do not seem to take into account what happened before and there are a few technical problems, but overall it's a good experience, and an interesting start for The Dark Pictures Anthology.
TheSixthAxis - Tuffcub - 7 / 10
Mad of Medan looks and sounds gorgeous, but it's spoiled by some technical issues and, depending on your choices, characters doing stupid things just so the plot can continue, both of which break the flow of what could have been a decent horror story. It's an excellent night or two's entertainment with a bunch of mates in a dark room and plenty of beer, though playing by yourself or online with a chum is an altogether more muted experience. This is a fair start to The Dark Pictures Anthology.
Thumbsticks - Tom Baines - 3 / 5 stars
It may be clever, scary and intriguing, but Man of Medan rarely reaches the heights of its stablemate and elder sibling, Until Dawn. Perhaps its a case of difficult second album syndrome, or more likely, it’s just too weighed down by the tropes and trappings associated with the genre. (And the sooner Supermassive ditches its penchant for fourth-wall-breaking, creepy old narrators, the better.)
TrustedReviews - Jade King - 3.5 / 5 stars
The Dark Pictures: Man of Medan is a solid beginning to what I hope becomes a memorable selection of virtual horror outings. The setting here didn't do much for me if I'm perfectly honest, but the memorable characters, razor sharp pacing and well-placed scares make it excellent fun with a few friends by your side.
Twinfinite - Greysun Morales - 3 / 5
If you like other choose-your-own-adventure games like Until Dawn, Life is Strange, and Detroit: Become Human, there’s definitely fun to be had here, but it is a flawed experience compared to other recent efforts.
USgamer - Mike Williams - 3 / 5 stars
With Man of Medan, Supermassive builds on the foundation established in 2015's Until Dawn. While the core of the game remains the same, driven by dialog, choices, and quick-time events, the developers has added some multiplayer action to the mix. The two-player online Shared Story is the primary highlight here, allowing two players to simultaneously determine the course of the story. Unfortunately, the story itself isn't as good as the horror yarn spun in Until Dawn.
VGN - Davide Frontera - Italian - 8 / 10
The new game from Supermassive Games offers a great entertainment experience, that can also be lived with friends for an unforgettable horror movie night. We can't wait for the next episode of the The Dark Pictures Anthology!
VideoGamer - Colm Ahern - Unscored
Man of Medan's story and characters fail to reach the heights of Supermassive's homage to the slasher flick, Until Dawn. The Dark Pictures Anthology isn't off to the greatest of starts.
Wccftech - Nathan Birch - 7 / 10
At its best, Man of Medan is every bit as gripping, beautiful, and giddily silly as Until Dawn, but technical issues, a rushed story, and a confusing approach to player choice betray the limited resources the game's creators had to work with. Man of Medan is currently the best option for those desperate for more Until Dawn, but I'm hoping Supermassive Games can scare up something a little more substantial for future The Dark Pictures titles. WellPlayed - Dylan Blereau - 7.5 / 10
Although it doesn't quite hit the heights set by its inspirator Until Dawn, Man of Medan is a positive debut for the Dark Pictures Anthology thanks to an excellent narrative
Worth Playing - Chris "Atom" DeAngelus - 7.5 / 10
All in all, The Dark Pictures Anthology: Episode 1 - Man of Medan is a worthy follow-up to Until Dawn. It hits a lot of the same notes, and it's clear the developers understood the group appeal of watching-slash-playing a cheesy horror film with friends. There are still some weak points, but Man of Medan shows a willingness to learn from the previous game's mistakes and leaves us curious to see the next part of the anthology.
Xbox Achievements - Richard Walker - 40 / 100
Failing to deliver as an effective horror story, Man of Medan is interminably slow to get started, and when it does, the narrative and performances prove more laughable than scary. The best kind of horror is the stuff that really gets under your skin, but sadly, this barely even pricks it. A soggy first chapter in The Dark Pictures Anthology, Man of Medan is best left on the seabed to rust.

2019.01.22 03:32 hannakm [Quick Guide] Things I Wish I Knew About Applying to Med School

Hi everyone!
After applying to med school this cycle and reflecting on the process, I found that there were times it felt a little overwhelming with the amount of information we have to know/jumps we have to go through/etc. There's a lot of really great guides out there to guide us through the process, but oftentimes it's not all gathered in one place. For the sake of convenience for future generations, I decided to compile a list of some of the things I found most helpful. Some of it comes from the advice of friends, health advisers, SDN and the world wide web, and others are just things I happened to learn by chance/personal experience while navigating the process on my own. Thought I'd share because it's handy to have a convenient summary/list of everything in one place, and also some things might not be as well known. (eg. I had never heard about the fee assistance program for applying, and didn't realize in-the-area requests were a thing).

Posted this info on SDN as well but re-posting on reddit on someone's request.
Also feel free to comment anything else you found helpful in this subthread. Would be happy to hear any more input!
-------------
COST (GENERAL)
Putting this section first because it’s probably one of the most important but under-discussed aspects of the application process. We all know that medical school tuition can be super expensive, but one thing that may or may not come up unexpectedly is just how expensive the application process itself can be. At least for me, the topic of paying for the application process never really came up with advisers, and I only happened to stumble upon the issue of money once through a chance conversation with a friend.
PRIMARY/SECONDARY APPS
Once everything is submitted, the wait begins! If you have everything between July and early August, interview offers can start trickling in any time starting early August (or in very rare cases, late July). That said, don’t feel anxious if it’s August/September and you haven’t heard anything. More than half of my interview invites didn’t come in until OctobeNovember, and there are people who continue to receive interviews all the way until February/March! I think the general rule is not to start worrying unless you haven’t gotten a single interview by Thanksgiving, so until then, sit tight, enjoy life, and appreciate the free time while (if) you have it.
PREPARING FOR INTERVIEWS
Whether or not you’ve received your first interview offer, it’s never a bad idea to start preparing. If you’ve gotten your first interview, congrats! Wherever you are in the process, here are some tips for preparing for interviews.
TRAVELING FOR INTERVIEWS
This post is not sponsored by Vamoose, Southwest, or Megabus.. just speaking from my own experiences trying to find travel options.
THE WAIT
Good luck everyone!!

2016.11.19 12:14 Clouds_and_Raindrops I decided to play a real game of Chess

I'am right now inside a cafe typing this while using their free wifi after buying myself green tea. I'm trying to warm myself as much as possible using the heater, blasting it to the max while standing right beneath it.
I know that he's trying to hunt me right now, I know that he's relentless, determined, committed, intelligent and unmerciful. And I know it's only a matter of time before he checks me again, and this time I know it will end the entire game, killing me.
These next series of documents and uploads are for anyone that concerns them in case I die. I just feel like....I need to tell my story to the world, and I understand that this website conceals your identity and marks you as an anonymous user. A website to just share your feelings without anyone knowing who you are. And that's exactly what I'm going to do right now. Let me give you the background information first.
This all started back two and a half years ago, when I was still in college. Back then life looked okay for me. I had good grades, I had a decent part-time job that payed well enough, I had a beautiful girlfriend, I had many close friends, and I still lived with my mom. Things could've been a lot better now that I look back, there were a lot of things that I wished that I've done and not done even before all of this cluster fuck happened. Regret and remorse are the only things that drives me now. You see back then, I got bored easily, I was one of those people that needed to do something constantly in order not to get low-key depression. I've started to undergo this tedious boredom ever since I graduated. This went on for sometime to the point where the boredom I experienced became perpetual. So, I would force myself to look for something that would keep me occupied. I tried to sports at first, I went from soccer, to basketball, all the way to fucking golf. And while all of those activities made me busy for a while, it wasn't something that I would actually be devoted in and spend more time on. So then I moved away from physical interests and moved on to social applications. I started to do Facebook, and it wasn't like I didn't have a Facebook account from the beginning, it was just that I wasn't really active into any social media activities. Back then I personally felt like talking to someone face to face was a lot more interactive than just texting (and in someways I still think it does). So I bet you guys can imagine how difficult it was for me to adapt to the new Internet culture. This whole new transitional period surprised my girlfriend (let's call her Yolanda) as she was so used to my distaste of social media. So you can see the surprise on Yolanda's face when I first texted her.
A little backstory on Yolanda: I first met Yolanda on college campus grounds in my freshmen. She and I were on the college campus tour and we sort of bumped into each other. After a couple of weeks of meeting each other and talking to one another, I decided to ask her out and she said yes. We had three classes together so our relationship had a nice steady flow to it. Yolanda was slightly shorter than me, has jet black hair with jade-emerald eyes. She was the very definition of gorgeous. We went on a lot of dates, meeting in restaurants, watching a lot of movies together, and even played video games from time to time in my place. So you can imagine how she meant the world to me.
I could see why some people would enjoy Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, and Reddit and all that shit, but all of those things looked the same to me, so of course I grew bored. I was about to trash the whole entire idea of using social media all together when one of my more nerdier friends named Tom introduced me to the Darknet. He told me that the Darknet was "sort of like the underbelly of the Internet." He also told me that there was a lot more hidden controversial and even illegal content in the Darknet. Things like drugs, the Hidden Wiki, unlimited amount forums, guns, and even fucking hitmen. I was immediately intrigued by this new web. I legit imagined a Facebook of leaked videos and confidential government documents, instead of food pics and selfies. Needless to say, I was fucking hooked.
Tom showed me how to download Tor and how to use it, along with other multiple security software that protected me from any other potential snoopers. Tom then taught me the basics of onion routing and how to defend myself from viruses or even hackers. Tom even provided a custom designed restricting extension to prevent any "NSFW content." He said that it was basically safe mode, to hide any extreme shit. He didn't provide much detail about it and just said that not to turn the extension off ever "or it will scar me for life."
For the first month, I was having a blast. Watching and listening and reading all of these crazy shits. Videos of suicides and warfare, leaked documents and hacked webcams. I'll admit, some of them were so disturbing, that it made the Saw franchise look like Teletubbies when compared. But all of these things were something new to look at, something a lot interesting than Tumblr or 9gag. I even tried showing this to Yolanda, but she wouldn't have it.
Days turned to weeks and weeks turned to months. I was inevitably getting bored again. So, I've done something that I shouldn't have. I was about to commit one of the most serious and stupidest mistakes ever in my god-forsaken life that caused me so much pain and suffering. I turned off the restriction extensions that Tom told me to never turn off, and I went even deeper. This took the word disturbing to a whole new fucking level. Child pornography, massive drug trades, illegal gun marketing, forums of confessed murders and kidnappings with proof, snuff films, crush vids, vintage recovered stories and films. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. This stuff could've put someone in prison for fucking life. I started to get a little bit scared and more paranoid around the Darknet and even considered turning some of these stuffs to the authorities. My better self got ahold of me I guess. I did some extra research about the Darknet and it's confiscation records. To my surprise, it was almost empty. Besides some of the biggemajor networks of drug trade and child pornography, there were little to no documentations of any actions of anyone turning in any of the illegal sites to the authorities, much less sites that were shut down.
I asked Tom about this and asked him if I can somehow turn in some of these lunatics anonymously. "Are you fucking insane?" He damn near shouted. "There is no such thing as complete privacy or protection in the Darknet!" "But can't I just-" I started. "NO!" He said firmly. "Fucking forget it man, look-these people, the moderators, the admins, the creators? They're nearly gods when it comes to comps. They know everything about everything. They will do anything in their power to stop you from letting that happen. They can track you down if they want to. They can have the names of every single family members you have. A lot of people had the same idea as you did and they tried to turn them in. I think you can guess what happened to all of them...All of the shit and security software you downloaded will be cracked open like a fucking egg. They will hunt your ass down, don't do it. Look man, I know it's hard to look away and avert your eyes from all this messed up shit. But trust me, it's a lot easier than running away from them."
I became a lot more careful after that talk with Tom. I did additional searches about self-defense in the tech world and booted my defenses by downloading more software. I became a little bit more paranoid and unnerved about the site that I thought was my escape from boredom. I realized how much risk I was putting myself into. Now you'd think that I learned my lesson and stopped browsing the Darknet right? Nope. My stupid ass kept on going, addicted to these new sites that kept on popping up like clockwork. There were always new things to look at. I made actual money than I ever did just by gambling, I made a lot of friends from it as well. I even posted a couple of forums about my perspectives on life and on politics, this introduced me to even more people with similar interests. The things that I used to see as vile and inhumane was slowly becoming more tolerable. My relationship with Yolanda became a bit strained and we went less dates than we normally did. I grew a lot more tried and exhausted after many nights of staying up and gambling and chatting with new friends and even buying a few drugs.
It was the middle of November as the winter season slowly creeping in, and snow was beginning to fall. I remember having a lot of more arguments with my girlfriend at that month about the most dumbest things ever. God, I was such an asshole. I remember that I turned my back on my close friends and even on my own roommate, Jake. I relied and depended on complete strangers for relationship advise and how to have smooth drug contacts. I was chatting with one of my more closer Darknet friends "Kilgore1609" while I was in my dorm and it was a Saturday. We were talking about debunking the algorithm of the computer system that shuffles the cards when we're playing Blackjack. Now, I don't exactly remember the conversation we had, but after hours and hours of digging through scripts and Java manuals, here is the chat box that I had with Kilgore1609. I'll be making some side notes to clarify some stuff up by using []. My username at the time was Clouds_and_Raindrops.
Clouds_and_Raindrops: You're serious?
Kilgore1609: yup, the fuker craked the system of the comp and figured out its pattern and shit like that, won 13 games in a row, guy was a legend
Clouds_and_Raindrops: Holy shit! I'm guessing that Dark Horse changed the algorithm after the incident?
[Dark Horse is the name of a massive online PVP Blackjack gambling site, this was how I made most of my money online]
Kilgore1609: no shit sherlock! they rewrote the entire program, encrypted the entire data boxes so that only the admins can access it when needed,,,speaking of which i heard that u made some nice $$$ playing dh
Clouds_and_Raindrops: It's just immense luck you know? Almost every player I encounter are always hitting.
Kilgore1609: y'noe u can make a gud rep out of dis rgiht/
Clouds_and_Raindrops: I guess...but don't think I will.
Kilgore1609: whadya meen/ u can make some nice pals by making them bit$$$ u noe/
Clouds_and_Raindrops: I mean that I will probably quit Dark Horse after a while...
Kilgore1609: butt u're pretty fuking gud, y quit/ u have a lvl 98 rank!!!!!dat's some hard sht right there,,,
Clouds_and_Raindrops: I get bored really easily, even at the things I'm good at I guess. Like I have to do something constantly in order not to get bored. I've got to find new things to do.
[At this point Kilgore1609 doesn't answer for about three hours]
Clouds_and_Raindrops: Hello?
Kilgore1609: u wnna do something w/ me/
Clouds_and_Raindrops: Like what? Anal?
Kilgore1609: a game dumbfuk
Clouds_and_Raindrops: A game?
Kilgore1609: yeh, it's called Che$$, it's like chess, butt irl,,,
Clouds_and_Raindrops: Huh...what is it exactly?
Kilgore1609: so there's dis compound out in LV, sort of like a abandoned,,,thing or som sht idk, me and couple of other pals gnna hang out there, iz like paintball sort of wiht like arsoft guns and shit, it's cul af dude. lots of other pals gnna play, ucan bring yo pals 2 if ya want.
[LV = Las Vegas]
Clouds_and_Raindrops: That actually sounds like fun. Where in Las Vegas exactly?
Kilgore1609: ere, clik on the link it shows u like teh location and sht: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx say yes on evrything
When I recovered this chat log, the link that Kilgore1609 sent me was automatically destroyed. These are known as "suicide links" when a user clicks on this link, it sends them into locked window and keeps the user there until the transmission is over. I was unaware of suicide links at the time.
What happened next was implanted into my brain so deep that I could recall this particular event in full detail even to this day. I was so drunk into the moment that all of my brain power and my intelligence left me. I didn't realize that the choice that I made was the choice that was going to give me so much pain, guilt, suffering and regret. As soon as I clicked on the link that Kilgore1609 sent me, my laptop screen turned black, pitch black. I was confused for a moment, and then that confusion turned into a moment of disbelief and curiosity as my screen blinked a couple of times with white pixels. Then my laptop displayed a huge message in a big yellow font.
"WILL YOU ACCEPT THIS OFFER THAT THE USER KILGORE1609 HAS SENT YOU?" I didn't know what to do at first. My first instinct was to type in yes just like Kilgore told me to do. Before I could even make up a decision, my laptop suddenly showed the word 'yes' in the screen. Like it was just suddenly there. My computer blinked three times again and then displayed the words: "WLL YOU ACCEPT ALL OUTCOMES, RESULTS, POSS-" I couldn't even finish reading the question, because I saw my laptop automatically input the word yes as an answer. Blink three times. Another question. "WILL YOU-" YES "WILL YOU-" YES "WILL YOU-" YES "WILL-" YES "WILL-" YES "WILL-" YES "W-" YES "W-" YES "V-" YES "V-" YES
This happened at an alarming amount of speed, with every nanosecond passing, my pixels exhibited a question and an answer simultaneously and at an automatic procedure. This happened for quite some time, and despite me pressing down the force quit and shut down keys, it kept on going. The thought of my computer right now being hacked at lighting speed was beyond me now, I had to end this as fast as possible or else every single information about me could be shown in front of the hacker's screen.
I picked up my laptop and teared apart my display screen from my laptop case itself, and then I proceeded to pick up the second limited edition of an AP Calculus textbook and smashed down on my now bare system board. Bits and pieces of plastic flew all over the place, my hard drive, my thermal cooling and palm rest assembly, my fan guard, my modular bay device was all hacked and smashed into pieces. The adrenaline in my veins started to cool down, and for a split, just for a split second I felt relief in my stomach.
It was instantaneously replaced by the feeling of trepidation and dread.
My detached display screen was frozen, and at the center of screen in dark black font was an address I did not recognize, and at the bottom with the same colored font said: WHITE HAS THE FIRST MOVE

2016.07.19 21:52 HHH_624 Wedding Recap - June 24, 2016 Portland OR (long)

Hello Weddit:
In advance, apologies for a long update and post! We wanted to provide a huge recap on everything that happened throughout our planning because reading these while we were in early stages of our planning was so helpful. Like most people, pictures first!.
By the numbers:
Breakdown (45k wedding):
Lessons Learned:
Good luck planners - remember to keep one eye on what's truly important and continue to celebrate your partnership together. All your hard work and planning will pay off, but keep your eye on the big picture because any small misses or hiccups truly won’t be noticeable to anyone but you. See you on the other side!

2014.01.30 23:42 the_fallen_king Don't replace a bad habit with a bad habit

I have tried NoFap many a times, and I think this is cruical for your success. This is a mistake that I have made countless of times, but that I'm hellbent on fixing. I'm currently a single man, so when I'm a part of NoFap, I am so on hard mode. I'm also one of the cursed few that never gets a wet dream, so might pressure just keeps on building.
What I have found myself doing alot is go insane after 2 weeks, then the initial high of NoFap wears off for me and I become desperate in order to try and end my hard-mode. The light at the end of the 90 day long tunnel is too far away so I start to talk to girls online.. alot.. too much.
What happens then? Instead of Fapping and get it over and done with in a few minutes so I can focus on other things, I sit with multiple chat clients open, facebook, skype, dating sites and the like and just alt tab between messages.
Now you might be saying to yourself: "That sounds like fucking luxury problem to have" well, it isn't. If you fish with a big enough net you will catch som fish, but from my experience, these chatting binge sessions never amounts to anything, I'm too focused on getting laid to pursue this in a productive manor.
Then I lie awake at night with my cellphone in bed, and I keep answering these messages. Usually from some pretty broken girls. It's about this time that I realize that this is not better than fapping, this is another bad habit that drains me, that consumes my mental focus, that keeps me awake and that makes me ashamed.
So for me NoFap never walks alone anymore, I need to break all the bad habits I'm ashamed of, that's the only road to self-improvement and the life I really truly want.

Questions Answers
What's your favorite Elton John song? say Tiny Dancer. It actually is Tiny Dancer ;)
1) What is the largest penis that you have been able to fully accept? 2) How much money do you usually make on a show? 3) What is the ratio of short people to tall people, that you have been sexually intimate with. 4) What is the biggest monetary tip someone has given you? 5) How long did it take you to become comfortable being naked in front of strangers? 1) Let's just say it was more like an arm than a penis really. 2) I get paid just to step on stage + tips. With both together it's anywhere from $400 to $1,000 per 15 minute show. 3) Never been intimate with someone as short as me. Mostly because there's just not a lot of us around and also because I like my guys tall and a little thick :) 4) $200 from a guy that walked in, saw me, and threw everything he had on stage 5) Not very long. I'm an exhibitionist by nature and I started with nude modeling and amateur nites over 10 years ago now.
Your size arm or mine? If it was your size arm I'd probably not be typing this now as I'd have been split in two.
Thanks for replying! After they went to the show, feedback was that she was way better than most dancers and I missed out on an awesome show. I live in the land of strip clubs (Portland,OR) so I'm sure the opportunity will present itself again. I'll make sure to check it out. :) I wish to visit your land of strip clubs one day! Which are your favorites out there? :) And glad to hear Tina put on a good show!
What sort of audiences do you usually perform to? Do they go to see you specifically because of your height or are they just there to see a male stripper? I'm actually a female :) In most cases I'm booked because of my height and that's what gets people in the door. A few people know my stage name Viva La Muerte from more of the burlesque world where I've managed to surpass the height stigma and get booked because my shows are good. On the club side it's newer and will take longer to prove myself. Though the comment I get most often is "Wow, that was actually a really entertaining show" They don't expect much from you when you're a tiny dancer. They just want you to get up there and 'be little'.
Is "Travelling Midget Stripper" politically correct? Also, can I get a lap dance? It's as correct as it's going to get. It's funny how when I use the word myself being the person that's short it really seems to make people uncomfortable.
Do you have a boyfriend? Wanna date me? 0:) I do and he's pretty awesome. Sorry!
Have you ever performed at the Paper Moon in Richmond, VA some years ago? I haven't! The closest I've been is a club called Legz in West, VA.
What's your craziest story? Stripping on America's Got Talent was a pretty wild twist. As much as I was allowed to strip on network tv that is... Jerry Springer was also a wild one. Riding up a ramp with fog on a mini motorcycle onto the Springer stage as he introduced me.
Do you think you make more than the average stripper due to your rarity? Does being shorter impede you from doing some of the things that (generally tall, for women) do? Saturday night, Connecticut? I think in some cases we do bank more depending on where the show is because people will line up to see a short person dance no matter who it is. On the other hand, there are times when the open mindedness of an area isn't good and people are authentically scared of a little person and will not come anywhere near a club to see it. Being this short does have it's challenges as well. I love pole dancing but have a really hard time learning anything significant and the longer ses of 15-20 min in clubs can be hard on the joints.
What has been your fondest/most interesting memory of your career? Performing at The Orleans in Vegas as part of the Burlesque hall of Fame pageant this year. It's the most prestigious burlesque event in the world and for a performer like myself to be accepted and able to perform with respect as any other normal size dancer was huge.
Damn, the one year we skip going to BHOF and you performed there! Love that you know of BHOF and have attended! It was my first year and I can't believe I got so far into my burlesque career without going to one. What a magical weekend! I'll be in attendance again in 2014 for sure!
What is your worst experience as a stripper? I've been lucky that nothing too terrible has happened thus far. I think the worst thing may have been showing up to do a 21st bday party and the bday boy was TERRIFIED of me and there was a large room of people and it was super awkward.
That emerald-green caped costume is absolutely stunning! Magical, even. What is the title of the performance you used it in, and do you have a link for us? Thank You! That is my 'Cthulhu Rising' number inspired by the classic HP Lovecraft story. Here is a link of the performance at Dallas Burlesque Festival! Link to www.youtube.com
How tired are you of hearing "Hold me closer"? Also, the pics on your site are pretty awesome. I love the Cthullu costume. I actually love that song despite hearing it over and over again. Glad someone recognized Cthulhu! That's always awesome when people get some of the weird characters I pull out!
Hi. I love your site. If this hasn't been asked before. I wonder why burlesque and not say classical or any other. What drew you to burlesque type dancing? Glad you like the site, thanks!! I like the drama and tease of burlesque and the use of satire within. The theatrics of it all are most appealing and it's a form of dance where as a community, I've been most welcome as an adult.
Would u ever think of quitting the business? Wouldn't dream of it unless it was medically necessary or my body takes a turn for the worse. I plan to dance well into my 30's and when I get older switch to running/managing a club of my own.
Thoughts on this Tucker Max story? A fantastic illustration of all the wrong ways to think about and approach little people, particularly the women. Although I'm glad he takes a moment to dispel the myth we have magical vaginas. Thanks Tucker! Whew! Now I won't have to answer that question ever again!
How big are the tips? Depends on the club and also the crowd. My biggest tips ever came from a hole in the wall more bar than a strip club out in no one cares where South Dakota. You could be in a nicer club and have it full of young college guys just there to stare at pussy and not tip.
My biggest tips ever came from a hole in the wall more bar than a strip club out in no one cares where South Dakota. I had to read that several times before I realized you weren't talking about a glory hole. Definitely not that kind of girl! lol.
But what if I already did? Also, my wife won't register as MrsFaptain. I should probably divorce her, shouldn't I? I would. That's just out of line and no fun at all!
Who do you think should be the new leader of Westeros? Maybe you?
A hot midget burlesque dancer just named me Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. This might actually be the greatest day of my life... Everything is coming up Millhouse...
Do you have a short fuse for height jokes? Har Har... you can do better than that! Give me one that will actually piss me off ;)
Pics? There's a lot on my site! www.vivalamuerte.us.
What's the craziest request you've turned down? Fulfilled? I've been approached by several married couples to join them in bed but have never indulged.
Ill be disappointed in Reddit if this doesn't make front-page. Recently I had a construction worker come in to see me and ask me to perform in parts of their uniform (vest, hat...) so I made it part of my act for them :)
How old were you when you learned/realized that you're a little person? Is it apparent from birth, or is it not evident until later? It didn't really become visibly apparent until about 1st grade but my family and doctors knew a bit before then and tried to stop it with injections that never worked. With many types of dwarfism it can be pretty apparent at birth, but mine wasn't.
I love your website! I've never heard of you before today, but I'm not much into Burlesque, but you are just downright lovely! Will you made a sign for us? EDIT: Just looked through all your photos, did I see an Alice Cooper tribute in there? Thank you very much! And yes, that was most definitely an Alice Cooper tribute! I do a big act to 'Welcome to my Nightmare' to which I've just added a guillotine!
O: That's so awesome! We need more strippers like you, all the ones around where I live are too vanilla and boring. Bring on the tattooed ladies! Are you going to be in the Seattle, WA anytime soon? No immediate plans for Seattle but if you can recommend any clubs in the area, I'd love to try and book myself out there!
You said that people hire you sometimes due to your size however has anyone ever hired you without knowing and if so what was their reaction? I was recently told by someone I met for the first time in person that had hired me having only seen photos of me online first that "I'm really not that short" There's a first time for everything! Don't think I've ever been told anything close to that at 4'3" lol.
Do you enjoy sex with average height men? Or, do you prefer smaller men? I just enjoy sex. Doesn't matter what height is!
If I were going to look at one thing from your website, which page / photo / video would it be? Definitely This... Link to www.youtube.com
I hope I'm not too late for this. As someone dating a 4'2" person thanks for showing that different people have perfectly normal sexualities too. Not too late at all! It's great to hear from someone that appreciates the point that those of us that are different are still very much the same/normal :) How tall are you yourself?
But you do have to admit that dwarfism brings its challenges, mainly to bone wear. Do you take steps to retain flexibility that's different from normal strippers and how do you think you can continue this? Dwarfism is riddled with physical challenges many of which go unspoken for me and other daily because it's constant and hard to understand. I've been extremely lucky though in the sense of keeping active has been my best way to keep my pain levels low and stave off additional major surgery. I've already had 8 major operations all before I was 21. The more i dance, lift weights, etc. And just do as much in general in life as I can myself I get stronger and it's easier to deal. There's definitely an expiration date on all of this though. And it normally comes suddenly and unexpectedly. So you do as much as you can before that happens!
Not sure if you're still answering these as a lot of the responses are from yesterday, but I have two questions: 1) I know you're a strippeburlesque dancer, but is it bothersome that ni a list of someone's porn in a movie Midget Porn will almost always be the punchline? 2) Have you seen "Life's Too Short" BBC/HBO series? And if so, what do you think of it? I just hate that people assume I've done hardcore porn or mistake me CONSTANTLY for bridget the midget the porn star.
Never seen that show! But I'll check it out!
Where can I hire a midget escort? I have no clue about escorts, that's not a part of the adult industry I delve into. I bet if you were anywhere near the Bunny Ranch they might have a little lady there.
I want to have sex with a midget at least once in my life. What makes you want to have sex with a little person? What do you think will be different/special about it vs. sex with any other woman?
Saw one of your answers where you said you'd like to stay and game at GenCon. As a fellow gamer, I've got to ask. What games? ;-) D&D and a little Werewolf apocalypse :)
I just watched a couple of your videos. How much of your performance is choreographed and how much is it you just doing your own thing on stage? It's all completely choreographed when it comes to burlesque. An act can take me anywhere from 2-3 months or more to fully develop and costume :)
What are your favorite bands? What's you favorite song to dance to? I adore the Red Hot Chili Peppers and I love dancing to a lot of classic rock/heavy metal like AC/DC & Metallica.
Have you ever been to Tampa?? I'll be near Tampa in March!!
Favorite games to play with patrons? I haven't played a ton but I do love my 'cooter hoop' as I call it. I have a little glow in the dark basketball hoop I hold for the patrons to shoot money into and if you make it I hand out posters, beer koozies etc. What are some games you have seen done that you like?
1 I think your gorgeous, 2nd what is your favorite thing to do? and favorite food Thank You! :) And my favorite thing to do is dance and/or play guitar. And I LOVE Tacos!!
"My short bio", I see what you did there... Clever, right?
If nothing else, viva, you've come up with the definitive AMA title. No one else should even bother TRYing to top it... Pretty concise indeed lol.
Yea give or take. For me that would have been about 2011 for that show. I actually didn't start doing burlesque or clubs until 2007 :)
I want to add to this question...where do you find/ shop for ANY clothes that fit. With the exception of hemming pants and sometimes sleeves on long sleeve tops, I can fit most womens clothing normally and quite well :) I make a lot of my own costumes and also work with costume designers in Chicago on custom pieces. I'm also fond of hunting on ebay and then modifying. I learned to sew early on when I was shorter and younger and things were harder to fit then.
Travelling Midget Stripper are 3 words that will gain anyones attention. Pretty much!
Yes, please answer all this guys questions! BOOM! Check it
You say in your bio you look good naked, but I think we need proof of this claim ;) Plenty of proof on my site! www.vivalamuerte.com Videos too!
The Alien icon made me pee in my pants a little. no offense. The classic film ALIEN sometimes makes me pee my pants a little...
So when are you going to post som... nevvermind. Hot naked pussy pictures? Don't hold your breath :)
No immediate plans for Seattle but if you can recommend any clubs in the area, I'd love to try and book myself out there! Also, tell my agents you love tattooed girls lol They seem to think still that it's not a good thing! Yes the tan stripper with the perfect body is nice but the real woman with the tats and her own style will always be more interesting I think!
Oh wow!! I saw you, and the other lovelies, at the GenCon show. You guys were ALL awesome. I cannot believe how much confidence everybody oozed. No question, just had to leave a note. How awesome!! Thanks!! GenCon is definitely in my top 3 favorite shows of the year. If only I ever had the time to stay and game! This was our biggest year yet! Thanks for coming out!!
Loved your section in the October 2012 Hustler issue. Keep up the great work! Thanks so much!! That was a thrill to be in Hustler!!
Aaaand here comes fap material for neckbeards. Fap is such a good word for it...
Fap is the best word ever... Fap fap fap fap FAP! I think we all should!

Do you get much hassle from the the guys who attend? Any funny stories.. At the beginning of each meeting we have a little rant about not outing people outside of club although everybody is free to attend. I think the most awkward people feel is when they come there for their honors project. At our school all honor students must attend a club they normally wouldn't attend and write a paper on it. We, of course, are high on that list.
People talk about our club behind our backs of course but we are getting a lot of acceptance recently through exposure in student publications!
Best story off the top of my head is during a meeting when people were introducing themselves and one guy said "I came here because I like to be dominated by women." then the girl next to him said "I'm here because I like to be dominated by men."
Perhaps they can set up a rota between the pair. Mon,Wed, Fri M>F. Tue,Thurs,Sat F>M. Sunday Icecream day. It can work for some :P I like the ice-cream day! My girlfriend and I are in a power-play thing but generally it's whoever starts the beating first.
Are you a bisexual man or a bisexual woman? I am a bisexual woman although I prefer the term pansexual.
Does no-one just want to dominate any more? Kids these days.. Oh I dominate ;)
You just pan through the available options around you? Pretty much, I pan until I hit gold.
They mean the same thing. One is just esoteric and pretentious. Not quite. In some cases bisexual will infer a gender binary, while pansexual implies a gender spectrum. It's just a more inclusive term.
What do you do with the pan? Spanking? Oh there are many many things one can do with a pan... The most delicious of which is pancakes.
You're a gold panner? Different than a gold digger, although the terms are not exclusive.
"I said REAL maple syrup, worm!" Haha I well remember that one!
2) How frequent are meetings, and how many attend? 2) Meetings are weekly and how many people attend depends on the meeting. It can be from 5-60. The rope bondage is a popular one of course and I'm expecting that due to 5 shades of grey we may see an increase in people this year. 3) I am involved because I am passionate. I discovered kink around 17, and since 18 wanted to be as involved in and try out as many things. I discovered this club completely by accident but was struck by how amazing it was that there was an educational group for Kink/BDSM. I have scars from when a boyfriend of mine did things without thorough research. We do our best to prevent that. People are going to do things anyways. We educate!
4) It can be challenging sometimes for clubs/associations to thrive when the foundemajor booster departs. Is this an issue for your club? 1) Within rules means we have to adhere to school rules such as no 'assault' or anything that can be classified as assault such as hitting, flogging, setting people on fire (WE TRIED TO GET PAST THIS ONE.) For impact we have a karate impact dummy. 4) We have enough people involved and we constantly attract freshmen who stay... so not an issue. Our club has been around a while!
You have so far mentioned a boyfriend and a girlfriend. What gender are you? Edit: Sorry, I have just read your username and have decided that you are probably female. I am a female, correct.
I heard that book is poorly written and doesn't even have real bondage sex in it. I just heard it had spanking in it and thought "i thought that was part of normal sex." It's not a good book and NOT a good example of healthy BDSM... but it makes BDSM more mainstream and attracts interested people.
What are the rules for "healthy" BDSM? 1) Do research. Never just dive in. Know how to tie without cutting off circulation, where to not hit with toys and what kind of wax you use: gotta be low-melting point for wax play.
2) Safety. Always have a back-up play for emergencies. Carry a first-aid kit, have safety sheers for rope, know your partner's limits. If you need to take your partner to the hospital, tell them what happened. Trust me, they've seen worse.
ALWAYS CLEAN YOUR TOYS BEFORE AND AFTER PLAY.
3) Communication is key! Nobody's REALLY psychic. it's important to try and earn as much about your partner's needs, desires, turn-ons, turn-offs, and VERY IMPORTANT: health problems. Do they have a pacemaker that you shouldn't have electricity near? Are they a hemophiliac? Do they have an STI?. Talk over how to prevent bad situations and enhance pleasure!
4) Ask for a YES! And don't be afraid to say no. Just because a person consented to a flogging does not mean they consented to sex. Always ask before proceeding to a new step. Little questions like "does this feel good?" "should I keep doing this?" may sound silly now but can help you greatly enhance your sexual experience.
5) Look out for each other. A sub isn't the only one who can freak out and pull out. A Dom can also have a flashback, or not be able to proceed. Always check in with who you're playing with to make sure you don't get carried away and cause moe damage than you intended.
I hope these help, if you have more questions or want clarification, don't hesitate to ask!
Thanks for this! I always wondered; not into BDSM myself but have a few friends that are and I respect it. Thank you for being so respectful! :)
Are many people in the club because they're looking for a partner, or just to learn, or maybe a little of both? I think various people come for various people, but mostly to learn and for a community of like-minded people.
What would biggest challenges be for the club? (Things like backlash from the school or student body) As for the worst, we had a problem with a demo a while back where a paddle was demonstrated on a consenting girl's arm and some school lawyer freaked out and tried to try the person for assault. This is why we are extra careful now.
Do you have any sort of waivers you have people sign now or do you just use the karate dummy for all impact demos? We just use the karate dummy :) People meet up to do what they want outside of club, off school property with no school affiliation.
How clear is the line between Kink club and orgy? Well it's really just a discussion type meeting. Since we are a university club, nothing like that ever happens. We meet on school grounds after all.
I guess my real question is do you guys every get carried away and just sort of fall into each other during your meetings? Or do you have like moderators to keep that from happening? A lot of people are extra friendly outside of club though :P.
Thank you the curiosity was dominating me. Well I wouldn't want to be a sadist and keep you torturing yourself with the thought.
2) I noticed you mentioned that 50 shades was a horrible book and that you thought it would bring BDSM more mainstream. I couldn't agree more that it is a terrible book (for me, mainly because the writing is horrible), but it sounds like you think it's a positive thing that the book brings BDSM more mainstream. Do you think the image that 50 Shades portrays is the light that should be shone on the BDSM culture? 2) No, not really, but I hope people realize it's a fantasy, albeit an unhealthy one. What I hope is that they get the curiosity to explore and research. :)
Has anyone ever done anything really over the line? Have you ever had to ban anyone from the club? We had one woman once who we were close to asking to never return because she took pictures of people with their permission, but people asked that these images not be put up online. She posted then on her personal page but after many requests took them down.
What's the ratio of men to women? I think we may have more women. The men trend to be older.
I envy you by the way, I can't find any kink club/munches near where I live, and I live in a pretty huge city.... And it's amazing to have this group! I myself have learned so much!
Are all of these older men students? Or do old guys just show up to get kinky with college girls? No most people are students or part of the local kink community. We are all familiar with each other.
My eyebrows raised a significant amount at the phrase "We are all familiar with each other" I apologize, my english isn't always the best. It is after all my second language.
Edit* spelling.
Do you need to check with the college before allowing outsiders into college clubs? Some colleges require that. Nope, since the funds don't directly go to sponsor anything the outsiders do. It's only a discussion club as well with some learning demonstrations that are all completely PG.
Sorry! It wasn't a spelling thing, I just found it amusing - though while we're at it, my question for the AMA is what's the backstory behind the reddit name? Why did you choose to spell it like Koi rather than coy ? Simply a fish that I like a lot :)
Do you have an extremely open campus? My college has a similar club, but because of the nature of our college, any campus visitors must be registered. We have not had problems really, and our club is open to everybody. Then again we don't advertise much. Once in a while we get a few jocks who come in and want to giggle, but at the beginning I kind of go "Welcome to ____, if you are in the wrong room, feel free to stay as we keep an open, welcoming environment." This usually shuts them up and I've had on occasion some return to want to be full members.
It's mostly power doms that are power hungry who end up bugging people. The club leader is some guy who doesn't even go here, and no surprise, the women all go here and are much younger. UGH. That can be frustrating. I think it's always important tot enforce that one has the power to say no. I always emphasize at my group that people shouldn't assume anything about their members or force them to talk about what they are uncomfortable with. Having a club leader that does not understand that the safety of the students comes first can be problematic, as if something happens to the students, they can receive a lot of judgment from school, faculty and parents.
I've had to complain to the dean about the fact that the off-campus visitors for the similar club at my campus were attempting to interact with my study group, which made us all feel really sketchy. We generally just shut our door and it solves most of the problems.
A lot of students are extremely uncomfortable with the notion of non-students being on campus, and even more uncomfortable with the notion of them being on campus for a club of a sexual nature due to stereotypes about BDSM (which of course aren't always true). This applies to all clubs. That's why we always make it clear that BDSM can be completely non-sexual, I used to met a man who would just tie me up for a few hours, NBD.
Most people hate the kink club on campus for being assholes and breaking rules, not because of kink, but whenever anyone criticizes them, they basically say that we're "oppressing their sexuality". This one frustrates me. Your club is the same as any other club, where people of similar interests gather to discuss them.
My school has strict rules for what goes on and a lot of people from off-campus don't follow the rules. That one is problematic. I have to say that needs to be discussed, and you need to explain that if this continues that you will not be able to meet on campus. If they protest, recommend them moving their munch to a separate place. Your group may be divided but you feeling safe and your club staying 'under the radar' so to speak is probably worth it.
Thanks a lot for your comments!
So I share a house with a couple of guys one of whom took a psychology of sex course at university and attended a presentation put on by members of our local kink community. Rather than coming away with a broadened perspective the spectrum of human sexuality, he seems to have gotten the impression that BDSMers are pretty much freaks. So I wonder when you have attendees that are doing their paper, when you interact with vanilla people in your capacity as president of your colleges kink club, how do you foster understanding? Do you do anything to highlight the normalcy of what it is that we do? I think it's always important to mention that consent is of the highest priority. Nothing is ever done without consent. And each person likes their own individual things, some just like certain sensations while some people like certain roleplays. If you simplify it down to 'vanilla' kink, it's easier to understand 'other' (?) kink.
Is it a sausage factory (besides you, that is)? No we actually have a pretty equal mix! Probably a few more girls because they're less embarrassed by sexuality I'm guessing :D.
Where was this when i was in college??? Oh the times, they are a changin'!
Do you get funding from the university? Yes, we do, mostly for things like flyers but we do get funding for some minor things like books. We were able to buy an impact dummy thanks to the university.
Do you do demonstrations during the meetings? Yes, but safely and on the dummy and if on people only non-violent things such as ties and only with consent.
How much anal? Haha, I love how people think that kinky means anal. I guess some people are int it, some people aren't!
Are you? Nope.
you said you was kinky. Haha I guess that depends on what you label as kinky!
How about just the tip? Really.
Any kinky professors ever show up? There was a professor I met at a local kink group who said he'd love to come but is worried about tenure, so he doesn't :)
A business card for this??! Who would you give that to? Generally people who would potentially be presenters or want to do interviews.
Do you hold munches often? if you are ever around the louisville group is amazing! Haven't been around to Louisville, I'll keep that in mind!
The university group holds meetings weekly and we all go out to a diner afterwards usually. Some people from the local king group I go to (which have monthly munches) come to our meetings! :D.
It is a shame the mix, the local, erm, well you can guess, was raided by police one night, and told everyone they had ten minutes to vacate the premise due to some fire marshall BS or something. Yeah that's bollocks. Our local group is friends with the guy who owns the venue and he closes it for our munches and play parties!
I'm a member of a few kink/BDSMclubs in my own country and loving every bit of it. You meet people from all places in society, people are generally awesome and extremly interesting. I got one question though, do you think some people have given up the dating scene, and learn to like BDSM/kinkstuff to have some sort of "last resort" getting a GF/BF? Some people, absolutely. But Most people in the BDSK/Kink community can spot them easily. They look uncomfortable, they don't identify as much, they're staring people up and down... That being said some try it out and find something they love. And that's fantastic. :)
"Safewords are for pussies. I refuse to use them." I choked on my food when I read that. Isn't that criminal negligence or something? Any "reasonable person" should not be thinking that's a good idea. Pretty much if you ignore a safeword, you ignore consent being revoked and that's assault/rape.
So are the meetings like a giant orgy or what? Do you have face control or can anyone join? How many members are ugly/fat? The meetings are purely discussion and demonstration of the PG sort.
What's your kink? Watching trains go into tunnels and not being aroused.
What is munches? It's generally shorthand for a group of kinksters to get together over food and chat about kinky things!
Are you perhaps looking for a photographer? I'd be willing to give a discount... Send me a message I can post it in our group!
Woah, Woah! We have BDSM CONFERENCES?! Aw, man, what the hell. I really need to get into the scene around me... They cost as much as science conferences though... But DAYUMN they are WORTH IT.
God i bet! That's awesome! I MUST attend one at some point. I cannot let that pass me by. How do you discover them....local kink community, or the local community in general? Google a city and BDSM kink Munch :) And fetlife is great as well!
I've heard such great things about fetlife. I must check it out. You most certainly should!
At what point would you say something had developed from harmless fun into harmful behavior? If the Pros and Cons have not been weighed carefully in advance, if there is the possibility of permanent damage to yourself or to others, if one is pressuring another individual into participating something they are uncomfortable with, and once consent is gone, once something is irreversible, that is a problem.
Where are you from?... I always found with girls it is very much area specific. Grew up in Chicago. What college? Not disclosing! :P.
I have nothing against religion, I just like don't like the effect of Catholicism on sexual expression. For some it certainly has that effect.
Are you on fetlife.com? Yes, I am!
<3 fetlife, android app is wonderful for discreet browsing! Yes but moooneeeey :P I do love FL very much.
Why is it that more women are interested in sex as a lifestyle and area of study( e.g. there are more women than men in fetlife, there are more female sexoligists than male, etc)? I don't know really, might be that women are more comfortable discussing various societal roles.
Do you have any part of the club about farts? I'm a guy that loves to enjoy the sweet sweet farts of a woman! I don't believe that is a topic that has been discussed, no.
How do I join? Haha. Show up :P Where you at?
Charlotte NC, you anywhere close? I'm afraid not :) Check out places on fetlife!
*Edit: content.
Boooooo. Sorry :(
Even though I don't attend Harvard, can I still join? This isn't a Harvard club but the club is open to everybody in the general area and community. Do some research to find out if there is a club near you!
You would think wouldn't you? Nope. I've heard it too many times to count from these idiots. Thankfully I don't hear it anymore since I'm not active in the community anymore. I guess it also depends on what groups you are a part of. Some groups are really good about kicking these kinds of people out.
That's the first rule... The second is be Safe, Sane and Consensual!
I wish I had this when I was in college! I was amazed that this club was available and throughly thrilled when I discovered the club :) It's very nice to have a place to be accepted and have a community that supports and doesn't judge what you are into. Also I feel it's good to mention that there are area-based kink groups that often will meet once a month or so who do similar things. Just search the nearest city/town next to you + BDSM group. A good place to look is www.fetlife.com ! Edit: added info.
Slinks away due to downvotes.
Thanks for the site! Looking forward to meeting a few new people, though I doubt I'd find any decent women looking for someone like me... It's a great resource. Definitely look at the groups, they are a great resource. There's a lot of knowledgable people on there who are willing to answer a lot of questions!
Do you have a website. Due to privacy I prefer not to post it on the thread if you will respect my privacy I will message it to you. That goes for everybody here.
Damn, wish my university had something like this. Far too often, things like this have this mentality attached to them of "let's ignore what makes us uncomfortable". It's nice to be able to discuss in a safe space!
There would probably some demand for it here as the student population is massive, but starting it up would most likely be difficult. Send me a message, I'll reply to it after this thread dies down a bit! :)
I posted in the main body of the thread about starting up a group. Hope it helps.
Have you had anyone in interested in long term slavery, castration play, or anything that could actually be dangerous to either their health or mental well being. If so how did/would you handle the situation. That's not something anybody has ever brought up in club.
If they are interested in something that is dangerous to their well being, I would try to talk to them first, if I am unsuccessful in persuading them to stop I would refer them to student services or get a councilor to help. Safety and well being is a priority to us.
I'm a bit of a deviant myself so I know how after a while the mentality regarding certain things seems to drift. For instance I may not be interested foot fetishism but I can respect it as well as anything else. That said is there anything you just really don't understand as a fetish. Adults wearing diapers for infantilism. I just don't get it. Unless it's for humiliation :P.
within the rules of the university. It is merely an educational place. It's a resource for people interested in BDSM/Kink and we think that if people are going to try things out we may as well provide a safe space for discussion and education. No actual impact play or anything that can be seen as assault or hazing is ever done. Demonstrations are entirely on impact dummies and consenting adults (for things such as rope ties). And to be fair, we have 50+ christian related clubs, 1+ sex-positive club (that discusses that sex is healthy and normal when practiced properly), 1 atheist club and many many many other clubs. We don't necessarily advocate sex. BDSM/Kink can be completely separate and we often do meetings and presentations on safe sex and have done a meeting on distinguishing BDSM from abuse and how to prevent abuse. EDIT: expanded explanation.
As a father I would love to know which schools allow something like this to happen on campus or enrollment via the school.
Just want to make sure my daughter never stumbles across something like this. Could care less if one of my boys found it.... I think college is where people discover themselves. Honestly, nothing wrong with getting som education before you try things out. It's not like we really advocate anything that isn't shown in the media, we just make it safe, sane, consensual.

You, like myself, have a wide variety of expertise. Outside of what you write about, what do you like to study? Hence, what I yearn for is improvements in PROCESS. The Enlightenment processes of markets and democracy, science etc have been spectacular! Guys like Clay Shirky claim the Web is making us hugely smarter in real time. But .... but I don't see that. There are many tools still missing and lobotomizing conversation to 140 words won't do it.
What can we citizens do, to overcome governmental resistance to transparency? The issue ends up buried under all the other partisan concerns -- yet every aspect of government would be so much better if transparent. How can we overcome the static friction and get the ball rolling? Those 6000 years show how obstinate the problem is, but they also show reasons for optimism! The Enlightenment's 250 year experiment has been amazing. Adam Smith said break up power into smaller chunks so the mighty will help us to hold EACH OTHER accountable!
"Too big to fail" is a symptom, I believe, that the power, once divided, is pulling itself back together. Hey, just askin. Me, I am a Smithian-Heinleinian libertarian. I distrust ALL accumulations of power! Look back across 6000 years and tell me who oppressed?
Mr. Brin, what do you think of the theory that humans can only hold about 125 people in their heads as close relations where they know the stories and histories of each one. It suggests to me that may be the base upon which to build our representation. Those 125 would be personally accountable. Why not use the strengths given to us through our development? More like from 2000 to 10,000. But our augmented reality glasses will deal with that for us!
See it depicted in Existence. Sorry for the plug but it is right there in great detail! Wish I weren't 7 hours reddit exhausted. Thanks!
What group of conspiracists worry you the most? Political, economic, military, scientific, insert group here? We all do selective perception. If you are "progressive" you notice conspiracies of the right and vice versa. (Personally, I find the "left-right axis" to be lobotomizing.)
I am Contrarian (My blog=Contrary Brin) so my libertarian friends get poked by me and they think I am liberal. My liberal friends hear my rave on and on about Adam Smith. But yes, I do believe that one conspiracy - HG Wells's "murdochs" - is the worst.
Those mutants in HG Wells... the Moordochs.
Repeat it slowly and think about it....
Sorry all1 Wish I weren't 7 hours reddit exhausted!
I may try to check in again tomorrow... or else follow me to Link to davidbrin.blogspot.com if you like. There's a good blog community down there in comments. Join in with detailed questions there I promise to answer!
I was thinking of the question more in terms of group/organizational structures than particular political groups. For example, current U.S. politics seems to be in a structural bind where neither Republicans nor Democrats can actually govern because the other group is willing to block or filibuster everything that the opposition proposes. But is this blocking of compromise actually an indication of conspiracy? I agree with what you say here... politics in America is dead and so is our national genius at negotiation and pragmatically working out practical solutions.
But I disagree with the assertion that it is equally the fault of both sides. One side repeatedly offers its hand and whines "let's negotiate." The other is the most disciplined partisan machine the republic has ever seen.
Republicans negotiate like Billy the Kid in Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure. "What I win, I keep. What you win... I keep." Well... it's a bit more complicated than that. The real diff is that there is still a distinction between moderate (the majority) pragmatic liberals and lefty kooks. The difference on the other side used to be distinct but it no longer exists.
the Democrats negotiate like Bill and Ted: "Sounds good to us, Mr. the Kid!" Instead, one side has become the most DISCIPLINED partisan machine in US history. That discipline is very very impressive. And deeply disturbing.
What are your thoughts on developing the intelligence of these species? Many will call EXISTENCE a prequel to STARTIDE RISING in that it shows one possible beginning to the Uplift Project. And it shows that it won't be easy!
Should we interfere or leave them to go on as they have? Oh, thousands of folks have written to me jazzed by the notion that we might someday spread the diversity of intelligent civilization on Earth - a worthy goal! We'll make other minds! AIs, uplifted dolphins and apes! Our children!
, rather, should we expand our ideas surrounding sentience to encompass these species (thinking mainly of cetaceans and other greater apes)? But then people realize it would take 200+ years and along the way? Pain.
Hey David, I am a huge fan or your writing as well as your opinions on technology and society (you have reversed my political opinions pretty much single handed). Most of all I enjoy the universe you created in the uplift saga, what was it that sparked the idea for an entire civilization built upon uplift? Do you see this as the inevitable progression of intelligent species or was it just a thought experiment? Finally are you planning any more novels, graphic novels or field guides (I enjoyed Contacting Aliens) placed within the Uplift universe? GREAT question. Almost all I do is informed by the Fermi Paradox. EXISTENCE lays down dozens of hypotheses (amid a rollicking, idea-drenched adventure! ;-)
In the Uplift Universe I wanted to do space opera with LOTS of alien races. Only how can that happen and be stable if everyone is colonizing and warring like mad... the galaxies would go to hell.
But the progenitors set up this cycle, see, in which your status is how many "offspring" races you raise up. This means everybody becomes fanatical to protect Nursery Worlds where candidate species can rise up. Wars are limited... see? It is not a friendly cosmos, but it does limit its worst failure modes...
ANswered in detail in one of the threads. I'd clip/repeat but, ooooog. Wish I weren't 7 hours reddit exhausted. Thanks!

It seems as though we're in an age where technology is lowering the barriers to entry in writing and publishing books, particularly through the ebook phenomenon. Do you think that large publishing houses will still be playing a major role in 10, 20, or 50 years? Or will we have completely switched to a grass-roots self-publishing system? Think of human society. 99% of those before ours were pyramid shaped, with oligarchs atop -- and we may be heading back that way. But the West invented the DIAMOND SHAPED SOCIETY in which a thriving middle out numbers the poor or rich.
It turns out some professions are naturally diamond-like. Engineering. You MIGHT be rich or poor but are likely to have a house/car etc.
The arts will ALWAYS be pyramidal. For every steven King there's ten of me who are doing great but who hate/envy him (he's a nice man actually.) ANd so on down. What has changed is the PATH to climb the pyramid. You can still get plucked up to the top by mavens and pros (editors) OR you can climb the Ramp of Merit with online pubs and fanzines and e-books and upward.
I've been a longtime reader of much of your work but I'm particularly interested in some of the material you wrote about in The Transparent Society. How have the ideas from that book played into Existence? What's your opinion of deliberate data pollution - lying - by individuals in order to deflect overzealous data miners? Well, you'll recall in EARTH (1989) there were web pages and other not yet invented things. And one plot element was that in the 2020s there had been the "Helvetian War". The whole world against Switzerland. Nuked the alps. But we finally got the bank records!
Your question is whether data miners can be spoofed, either by individuals or by groups like the "Friends of Privacy" in Vinge's novel... flooding the net with so many auto-generated lies that you can't believe anything anymore! Will our age be viewed as lost innocence, when you could trust what you found online?
I call for a different approach to reclaiming and holding onto freedom and privacy. The "restaurant allegory"... that we need openness so we can catch the peeping toms.
You've been in and around the libertarian movement for a long time now, and I enjoyed reading the transcript of the speech you gave to one of their organizations. Which two or three ideas from that movement would be the most important TODAY to inculate into American political discourse? European? I am desperately sad that the Libertarian movement has been hijacked by followers of Rothbard and Rand, who declare idolatry of two things that should be utterly secondary... unlimited personal property and unlimited hatred of all government, all the time. And they never notice that always falling below 1% of the vote MEANS something.
I first read about Mondragon from Making Mondragon: The Growth and Dynamics of the Worker Cooperative Complex, which I highly recommend for an overview of the cooperative. Wish I weren't 7 hours reddit exhausted. Thanks!l.
If you were forced at gunpoint to write a fantasy novel, what would it be like? No need for gunpoint. The Practice Effect had all the fantasy furniture, princesses and dragons and such. All right, like Anne McCaffrey it was still MORALLY science fiction in that it favored progress, not static, endless feudalism...
And I have concepts for some fantasies I'd like to write. But I suppose in those too, the heroes would be sons and daughters of blacksmiths, who want to end lordly oppression. So I guess I am stuck.
The practice effect was sooooooo good. I love hard core sci-fi but that novel was so much fun. Thanks for that. You are soooooooooo nice to say so!!!
No need for gunpoint. There are SOOOOOOO many tales I'd love to write! Including many fantasies. Problem is limited-linear lifespan! And parenting teens. ;-)
But it's fun! It is why I fantasized the self-duplicating tech in KILN PEOPLE! Oh to be able to do everything in parallel!
That novel was such a cool different book!!!! )
Thank you very much for doing this AMA. I'm sorry that it didn't get the attention it deserved but hopefully you'll be able to respond to some of the questions that may appear now that the AMA is properly highlighted. Maybe you could get back to them tomorrow, I know I'll check back! Anyway, I am a definite fan of your works and Kil'n People is my favourite book. I loved the mystery set in a world where personal time is not a scarce commodity. It intrigued me greatly so I do thank you for the entertainment. Of course I loved the Uplift books as well - the first trilogy more so than the second which I found somewhat more dry and less exciting than the first. You've done some excellent work and thinking on SETI. What are your thoughts on the ideas espoused in Orson Scott Card's Ender series which looked at the possibility of "varelse", an alien species which was so foreign that we could never communicate with them? (Apologies if you haven't read it but the short summary should give you the basic idea) There have been a lot of 'solutions' proposed to the Fermi Paradox. One of the most interesting (to me) was proposed by Charles Stross that species stayed close to their stars of a post Singularity conversion of much of their solar system's mass to computronium. What idea(s) do you find most compelling that explain the Fermi Paradox? Sorry Klarok, but am I writing my answer here just for you? Or will everybody see it? Pardon my klutziness, but shouldn't I give priority to public questions? These are fascinating issues that you raise! But could you raise them in the main thread? Or else come to my regular blog community (under comments at Link to davidbrin.blogspot.com) and ask there? 1a: on Earth all higher level creatures seem to understand some general concepts like quid pro quo. Cephalopods like octopi have amazing overlaps with us and communicate in primitive but real ways that are limited by their abilities, not by their differences from us. 1b: Humans are diverse. If aliens land in a shopping mall in southern california, we may not understand them, but 5% of my neighbors will try to date them! Seriously, is that what his fans want? Is that what YOU want? And what if the uber guys you fantasize being... turns out to be some other doofus and not you?
1c: I am not a fan of Scott Card's repetitious, single minded theme, that average human beings (or merely above average folks) are hopeless fools and salvation can only come by allowing some Nietzchean uber-man take over and tell everybody what to do. I am more interested in the story of a civilization that might be smarter than all of us. Because all of us pitch in to be as smart as we can be. It's what got us the party we're all enjoying, notwithstanding SciFi ingrates.
I do enjoy your stories, but I am aware you also do real science. What are you currently working on? I do little guerilla raids into branches of science that interest me, and screw credentials! Hence, I just had two papers in a new psychology book called PATHOLOGICAL ALTRUISM... which focused researchers on a real problem. That oft times we try to do good for others and wind up wreaking harm.
I analyzed how altruism can be addictive! And why the real thing is rare in nature. (And may be rare among aliens! But now I am getting into the topic of my novel! ;-)
What did you conclude with regard to altruism being naturally rare? Link to www.setileague.org
It's interesting!
Interesting, I have wondered that myself (whether aliens have altruism that is) do you think that though altruism may be rare, that it will be incredibly beneficial to those species which develop it? Alas, the core group at the SETI Institute hold to the "altruism is automatically universal" mythology for reasons of their own.
They run interfeerence for others who are rudely beaming "messages" into space (METI) without consulting peers or colleagues or the public, all based on the altruism assumption. Many of us have resigned from the SETI committees in protest.
See this laid down at: Link to lifeboat.com
Is there really such a thing as altruism? Wouldn't Pathological Altruism really simply be a selfish person, group, organization, government's addiction to the feeling they get when being altruistic? A very good question since most altruism in nature is kin selection... and yet... well... I talk about this in Existence...
, no, I'm not a Randian. She was an idiot. Wish I weren't 7 hours reddit exhausted. Thanks!
What was the focus of your academic life and do you miss doing research or do you still participate? And what pushed you towards a career in writing? Which other hard sci-fi authors do you enjoy reading the most and what do you draw inspiration from? In my bio I talk about growing up in a family of writers. Always knew I'd do it. But looked around and realized: ALL societies had artists/storytellers, but only one developed millions of scientists whose aim was not to convince people to BELIEVE in a temporary tale... but to know what is true. Verifiably true. And I wanted that!
Did it! Batted a few out of the park. (All nature shows that depict comets show dusty fountains... my theory and thesis.)
But civilization proved willing to pay much more in $ & admiration for my stories! Well well... who am I to argue with civilization?
What's your take on book piracy? I mean, I took a look in places and your new book is already out there. Please email me separately with some of those piracy sites? Please?
It turns out many of them will remove the item if you ask nicely.
Look I have kids to feed. I am Mr. Transparency and I believe in general info openness. But we need to remember why IP (intellectual property) was invented in the 1st place... to end 6000 years in i which creative people could only benefit by keeping things secret! That's how we lost the Baghdad Battery, the Antekithery device and Heron's steam engines!
Yes, let's move on from Copyright fascism! But in an orderly way that still lures creative folk into the open.
On this topic, I am curious of your thoughts on the open-sources/creative commons movement. Any thoughts on this different model to promote creativity? I take a middle road. I must pay for college educations! But I know the world is changing and I am willing to discuss OTHER ways to solve the riddle of getting creative people to end 6000 years of secrecy.
And I do give a lot of stuff away or price them low.
Replied to this exactly in thread. Sorry but it's been 7 hours.....
How much college do you need to be a scifi writer? I like to think that creativity in the hands of an artist is natural. It's not how much college... it is your ATTITUDE while at college. If you DEVOUR those 4+ years and hungrily grab every chance at eclectic mind-gorging... then an English major can get you there. Witness english majors Greg Bear and KS Robinson who write the best hard SF around!
Of course science does help and my PhD don't hurt. But dig this. Sci Fi writers are more often experts on HISTORY than on Science. Figure why?

Since writing The Transparent Society, have you changed your opinion about the potential for transparency to improve society? Do you track projects related to implementing the concepts presented in that book (and if so, do you have a list of active and/or defunct projects)? Are you interested in being involved in such projects? I grow increasingly convinced that the four great innovations of the Enlightenment: Democracy, Markets, Science and Justice, absolutely depend on most of the participants knowing most of what's going on, most of the time.
All four languish, sicken and die if secrecy prevails.
I am a moderate! The Transparent Society is filled with discussion of exceptions and privacy is important!
But ironically it can only be defended if we see well enough to catch the peeping toms.
Ever think, "Hey, at least I didn't write Waterworld"? Yeah, well... don't get me started on Costner. He was an absolute jerk to me, beyond belief. Yet I helped him and was a team player, and overall I refuse to hate him. Because the final film, while abysmally stupid, was actually rather BIG HEARTED! It tried to convey a moral message similar to the one in my book.
Also, like all Costner flicks, it is visually and musically gorgeous.
Gorgeous, bighearted and dumb? Yeah. I guess that's okay.
Yes, the movie was big hearted and I'll have to admit that I enjoyed that part of it. That said, I enjoyed your book much much more! Janet Asimov called Foundation's Triumph her favorite non-Isaac book in Asimov universe.
I was absolutely enthralled with your work (Foundation's Triumph) with Greg Bear and Gregory Benford creating the 2nd Foundation trilogy. I felt that you (and the other B's) had channeled Dr. Asimov himself! It must be hard to write with another writer's voice. I felt honored to tie his loose ends.
Care to comment on that? Wish I weren't 7 hours reddit exhausted. Thanks!
Who are your favorite Sci-Fi authors? What am I reading now? Many fine choices! I recently read Vinge’s Children of the Sky. Now reading Stan Robinson’s 2312. Next up: Scalzi’s Red Shirts.
My favorite Science fiction authors? John Brunner’s five years as the mad god of 60’s SciFi. Poul Anderson as story-teller. Fred Pohl as explorer. For example hi AGE OF PUSSYFOOT... nailed personal phone/assistant/Siri back in 1980. Stunning book.
My own list of favorite Science Fiction & Fantasy Books: from Asimov to Clarke, from Bradbury to Brunner: Link to davidbrin.blogspot.com
Recommendations for Young Adult Science Fiction: with books from Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, Philip K. Dick, Robert Heinlein…Link to davidbrin.blogspot.com
Existence is a big book; if it was broken up into several parts, you would make more money... uhhh, right? Just curious about the thinking that goes into sizing and splitting a big story like this. That would be unfair. As-is, I felt sheepish about breaking up Brightness Reef/Heaven's Reach, which was twice as long! EXISTENCE gives you your moneys worth! Yes the hardcover ain't cheap. But divide the cost by the number of hours of enjoyment ? There's only one better value... ...video games... okay I'll admit you get more hours per dollar. But do they give you more ideas? Or skills? Or moments of drama to remember decades later? ;-) I still like books tho!
Also, I've heard that e-books return less money to the author. Is that right? Or generally true? In fact, e-books return a higher % to the author than hardcovers do. Moreover, if you go to Link to www.davidbrin.co there's a way to get a signed bookplate so your e-copy is "signed."
Speaking of book trailers, were you as disappointed as I was at the entries for the CG Challenge on the Uplift Universe? Good call... yes I was deeply disappointed. It turned out that most of the CG Challenge guys live in Eastern Europe or South Asia. None of them had read Greg's books OR mine! But Greg created a thirty page outline to guide them and I said have fun I leave it to your creativity!
After that fantastic EON trailer, I wanted to see dolphins driving starships and pissing off the Gubru. But no, all we got were half-assed aliens from people who didn't even bother reading the source material. I learned a lesson.
What were the Buyur up to? What was that ancient fleet with the mummy up to? First I must answer #1 and #3 in the long awaited "creideiki-orley" novel, which is my next BIG PROJECTS. I must still finish FOUR other things first! But that's what I promised folks. Ain't getting any younger.
Your Uplift Novels are among my favorite ever. There hasn't been anything in a while though, despite the hanging ending you gave us in Temptation. When will we see some more? Will we find out more about Earth or will we be focused solely on Jijo from now on? Those books didn't sell as well as I expected. But I have 40,000 words of another (great!;-) Jijo novel and hope to get to it. Oh how I wish I had the self-copier from KILN PEOPLE! I would put it out in no time!
They are among my favorite books too. Although, candidly, I found the first trilogy more enjoyable than the second. Understandable. The Jijo novels were all one big connected saga. The first three stood alone.
I do hope to get back to Tom, Creideiki and the others soon.
Till then, see the story "Temptation" downloadable at Link to www.davidbrin.com
Some will argue that "Existence," is uplift!
When you wrote for Ecco the Dolphin, how much direction were you given? Was it like an outline that you had to flesh out or did you have free reign to do whatever you wanted? Great Question! I loved that project. Usually, the writer makes the story and then the artists must follow. That is as it should be!!! ;-)
But it can be fun the other way. Start with art and then write a story to fit it. In this case, the action scenes for ECCO were already underway and they had a good logical path. A great game! But they needed reasons why Ecco would be on a quest through time. So I supplied that plot and story and narration...
And it turned out to be something really beautiful.
After dumbstrucking myself as I usually do with these sorts of AMAs... I finally know what question to ask. Is there a possibility for a a Dziga Vertov approach to expanding or morphing human archetype(s)? Another way of asking this is, when or will technology change the "steadfast" compartmentalism of the human condition? Wow. Thanks for a fascinating, intellectual question. But it's been rough. Now, after 7 hours, suddenly people are swarming in! BAsically, I do not believe in eternal verities. There is human improvability or why live? Much of what you ask about is in EXISTENCE.
Edit: the SiaSL question is mostly there because of your mention of being influenced by H. That book was something I'll never untangle from. Wish I could hang around. But slammed... and brain won't wrap around your question.
As in who makes the scifi today that you can't put down regardless of its quality and who makes you say, "Goddamn, now that is done speculative fiction!"? My favorite Science fiction authors? John Brunner’s five years as the mad god of 60’s SciFi. Poul Anderson as story-teller. Fred Pohl as explorer. For example hi AGE OF PUSSYFOOT... nailed personal phone/assistant/Siri back in 1980. Stunning book.
Is there a song you listen to in order to get the futuristic juices a-flowing? Huh! Well music is great. I gotta admit. Sometimes I put in Polodarus's film score for CONAN THE BARBARIAN. It is SO cinematic and storytelling and over-the-top dramatic. You must either be repelled or just give in and let it FORCE you to fantacize!
What do you think of other authors, like Douglas Adams, and Michael Crichton? I miss Doug Adams terribly... and in his honor I am writing a sci fi comedy! Comedies are very very hard to get right, so I am nervous. But a lot of people say it's gut-busting so I am hopeful.
Michael Crichton was a very nice man who always wagged his finger at us all warning us against scientific ambition. He helped to inspire one of the major characters in my new novel. In fact, you'll glimpse him in the trailer! tinyurl.com/exist-trailer.
BTW... my sci= fi comedy I just mentioned is the more sober of two. There is a shorter one that is simply outrageous!
Link to www.amazon.com
Yes! One of the greatest movie soundtracks ever! Also Victory at Sea, Hunt for Red October, anything by Elfman.
I'm very fond of the Lord of the Rings soundtracks, too. And Last of the Mohicans. Thing about Conan is that when I mention it to people, they always wrinkle their nose, and I have to reassure them that "Really, it's good!" It's one of my favorites to play when I'm coding. The movie was "perfect" at being what it meant to be. Not great cinema! Just perfect.
Could you stick to the subject of Rampart, please? Oh so I am Harrelson now??????
If I weren't 7 hours reddit exhausted... why I oughta!!!
)
Yes thanks! I really appreciate you taking the time to reply to my post. I guess I just felt like adding, because, it seems somewhat relevant to talking with you, I guess my dream with science would be helping man kind establish and sustain life in space (i.e. base on the moon, colony space stations) as a permanent solution for life besides just the earth. I know that based on what you've said finding a prof who takes me in as an assistant is the crucial part, and getting to a point where I could study something related to my "dream" might be much harder than I think. Is it worth persuing a dream like that, or is it better left set on the back burners and focus my work and effort else where? But yes we must recover the dream....
How can I become a futurist? Get a time machine! In fact. Because I just gave you this advice, you will become obsessed and get rich and powerful and then send one back to your present day self, to find... hm... behind your garage. It is disguised, of course.....
It sounds like your new novel, "Existence," has a lot of "coming of age" observations in it. Looking ahead to the future, what advice would you give to today's young people for a happy, purposeful life? Well, first you might have kids view this little posting I offer of advice for college students and graduating high-schoolers - how to make the most out of university life! Link to www.youtube.com
Do you know where your own contrarian streak comes from? A sense of how desperately little time we have to get things right. And that everybody who enslaves themselves to a simpleminded dogma is betraying their own agility of mind or ability to learn from one another.
What think about EARTH novel? was written in 1990 and you show us lot of things that we enjoy now. And thanks to you and gracias, friend. It happens that fans have set up a wiki to track predictions made in EARTH and in The Transparent Society - with a score of about 40% hits and another 40% "not yet proved". Hoping SOME of the predictions in Existence go similarly... though som I hope will not come true.
I'm waiting the arrive of Existence now, but you know when will be translated to Spanish.
Eeek I have been on for 6 and 1/2 hours and answered the Fermi question several times. Could you skim for those answers among the threads? Oops... I meant to say: Arguments rage on and on about the so-called "Fermi Paradox" or "The Great Silence"... the puzzling fact that we see no signs of advanced civilizations among the stars. Nor evidence that Earth was ever even visited, during the two billion years that it has been prime real estate, with an oxygen-rich atmosphere. Many theories have been offered fervently by very smart people, each of them convinced that he or she has the aha-answer! But way back in 1983 I published what is still - to this day - the only major review article about alien contact, surveying almost a hundred different hypotheses and ranking them according to plausibility.
It is the focus of my life. Both in science and fiction. My new novel (Link to www.davidbrin.com ) covers dozens of explanations.... Surprisingly, there have been almost no new ideas since then, though plenty of heated opinion! Quarterly Journal of Royal Astronomical Society, fall1983, v.24, pp283-309 Link to adsabs.harvard.edu
